CIN3 and Colposcopy

Hi Everyone,

New here and I am really struggling, tralling the Internet trying to find the information I am after!

I am 32 and recently had my smear, the letter can back with HPV positive abnormal cells high grade severe dyskaryosis - CIN3.

What I am trying to find out to put my mind at ease, is has anyone had the same and did it turn out it was cancerous! and what is the odds of it being cancerous?

My colposcopy is booked in for the 20th April.

Any information anyone has would be great.

Thank you so much x

  • Hi,

I don't really have much advice for you, but I'm in a very similar position. I'm 25, had my first smear last year which was hpv positive but no cell changes, I've had my second smear this year and it came back with severe dyskaryosis. I had my colposcopy yesterday and it was confirmed CIN3 but biopsies were taken to check there was no cancer but she said it didn't look like it. They said I'll be having cold coagulation treatment, but wanted to wait for the biopsy results, so the next 4 weeks of waiting is going to be hell.

Surprisingly some of the figures I've found on google were reassuring. Roughly 12% of women with CIN3 go on to develop cervical cancer, with that usually being after 10-20 years of having CIN3

Hope that helps you a little, and knowing you're not alone in this x

  • Thank you for your response

We're the biopsies painful? I'm glad they confirmed to you that it didn't look like there was cancer thats good news. Hope you hear back soon! I'm not looking forward to that wait if they need to take a biopsy.

I hope your treatment for CIN3 goes well.

Thank you again for your response I apriciate it x

  • Hey,

No the biopsies weren't painful at all, I braced myself but didn't need to. You can feel a tiny pinch but it's definitely not painful at all which I was surprised about!

The staff were so lovely too, I'm sure they're used to everyone being scared. I literally burst into tears a couple of minutes into the consultation and they were great with me.

Thank you! Let me know how you get on! x

  • Hey!

So I had my coloscopy yesterday and doctor confirmed CIN3 and offered me LLETZ procedure there and then.

I said yes as I want the bad cells gone! How ever she didn't say much else, said she would send the samples off and I'd hear back in 4 weeks! Now in the waiting for results boat with you!

LLETZ wasn't very nice, to be honest I'm not sure the local anesthetic worked that well for me and I found it a bit painful! But I had a lovely nurse who held my hand the whole time as my husband couldn't come in due to COVID!

How far are you into your 4 week wait? How are you feeling? X

  • I'm having my LLETZ treatment for CIN3 in 2 weeks.  I wasn't offered it there and then but had to wait for biopsy results.  I'm really nervous about the whole thing!  Biopsies didn't hurt so hoping the treatment won't be too bad!

  • Hi,

Please dont worry, the experience is different for every one! I wasn't prepared for it to be painful as most things I have read people didn't find it painful, just uncomfortable, unfortunately for me it was, but they were all lovely and it takes a matter of minuets!

However a lot of people have said recovery from it is hard. I had quite a bit of bleeding yesterday and this morning (but unfortunately came on my period a couple of hours before my treatment )  but no cramps no pain at all in fact, even took the kids on a 4 mile trek round the zoo today! Everyone's experience is different.

Have you heard back from your biopsy now? Are they OK?

Hope your LLETZ goes well x

  • Hi, yes the CIN3 was the biopsy results.  They originally thought CIN1 or 2! So just a bit more concerned now. Thanks so much for replying. X Hope your recovery goes well.

  • I didnt get a biopsy as she could confirm CIN3 from my smear and colposcopy. So hopfully they will get rid of thw bad cells for you at the LLETZ and that's it that's what I'm hoping for with mine.

The LLETZ results take about 4 weeks where I am  which feels sooo long!!!

But honestly try and just relax when you have your treatment, I had a lovely nurse who let me hold her hand through out.

Let me know how you do and please dont worry too much x

  • Hi, so I've had the Lletz treatment today.  It didn't really hurt just uncomfortable.  As I'm 44 and had my children, she said she would be very thorough which I'm relieved about!  She said she can't see anything too worrying so I'm just waiting now.  Glad to have got it over and done with.  Hospitals are back to normal now though which was a surprise as just two weeks ago it was only essential appts. and very quiet.  People everywhere today!  I've got some cramps and back ache so far but not too bad.   How are you doing and have you heard anything yet? X

  • Hi,

I'm glad your LLETZ went well and she said she would be thorough thats great!

My recovery after LLETZ is fine, no problems at all. I run a lot, but been told I can't for 3 weeks which is bugging me the most! I'm causing my self headaches and neck ache from the anxiety waiting for my results though! As much as I try to be patient it's hard.

2 weeks since my LLETZ today and still waiting for my results. Hopfully don't have to wait much longer. Did they say how long you would have to wait for your results? X
