Lump in neck, been referred. What tests will I have?

I've just had my first appointment booked at the hospital via the 2 week emergency appointment. A bit of background information. I'm 27 years old and female, non smoker.. Ive had a lump in my neck for about 4 months now which has gradually got bigger. No other symptoms. My grandfather passed away 10 years ago from throat cancer but he was a heavy smoker.

I'm just looking for advice as to what will happen during my first appointment and what sort of tests to expect. Thank you everybody in advance for your responses as my mind is currently going crazy.

  • Hi there,  l can understand your mind is all over the place,  l can empathise with you,  l too have developed a large lump in my neck. I've been seen by a ent specialist fast tracked by my gp  during my first appointment he just asked questions and examined my neck and put a fine tube up my nose and down my throat,  it was painless and over in a couple of  minutes he then said l will need a ultrasound scan and a biopsy, a fine needle aspiration , I've just received my appointment for 5  May,  I assume you will probably have the same tests,  from what I've been told they are very quick and simple tests.

I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry the waiting is the worst part,  take care and let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you for the response. I hope everything goes well for you too! I just know it's going to be a very long 9 days till my first appointment then even longer if I need more tests afterwards.
