Testicular Cancer Preventative Orchidectomy

Some years ago my brother died from testicular cancer. My father and grandfather both had testicular cancer. This family history makes me a much higher risk of getting it too. In addition I had an undescended testicle which is another risk factor.

My second wife died of breast cancer so I understand how terrible it can be when cancer gets out of control. It terrifies me.

My question is whether it is possible to choose to have a preventative orchidectomy so that it becomes impossible to get this cancer which is a high risk for me?

I'm hoping the answer is yes since I know some high risk breast cancer women went for preventative double mastectomies so the same should apply to men in the case of a history of testicular cancer.

I'm waiting to see a urologist on this or am I wasting my time?

  • Hello Tonto

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some health concerns at the moment. From what you've shared in your post it's understandable that you're feeling concerned about the possible risk of developing testicular cancer at some point in the future.

I'm not really able to answer your question about if a preventative surgery is something that may be available to you and I can't see that we've had anyone post here on the forum before with the same query.

I certainly don't think you're wasting time in seeing a Urologist to discuss your concerns but in the meantime, you may want to give our team of nurses a call to talk things through with them. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice and information that they can as well as helping you think about some of the points you might want to raise with the Consultant. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
