Melanoma?

Hi

hope someone can help. I've been referred to a dermatology'one stop' clinic under the 2 ww pathway. My gp thinks I have possible melanoma. The mole itself is one Ive had for years on the top of my toe- it has suddenly grown over last few months and is 'tingling/mild itching every now and then. I was just going to drive myself there but then wondered woukd they take a piece of it off my toe on the day? Or remove whole thing- as I can't see how they could as it's fairly big now and in very thin skin to start with. I don't want to go and then be told I'm not to drive home or would it be because it's an awkward place and quite big would  they rearrange a date to remove it for biopsy? Sorry if it's muddled. Unfortunately not new to cancer- have already had breast cancer and my husband has advanced prostate cancer. This has just about finished me off!

  • Sorry to hear you're going through this.

Would it be worth getting a taxi there and back or having someone drop you off?

I went about a suspicious mole and they made me a further appointment to have it removed later on (and biopsied at the same time) so your I initial appointment would probably just be an assessment? If they're really worried they might remove it there and then so maybe just get a taxi just in case? I think they only look at it through the microscope and evaluate it that way so it may be they have you back in for it to be removed in any event.

Fingers crossed it's nothing sinister but even if it isn't, I vote to remove it - I did with some dodgy looking ones of mine, at least if it turns later you've got rid of the ***!

    Sending you positive thoughts.

  • It might be done on the day – depends on who's on staffwise and how busy they are. I've three times had surgery on the day and twice had to go back. Some of the surgeries I had involved the removal of more than one lesion and one surgery took two moles close together out in one fell swoop – that was an on-the-day surgery. Good thing is you're getting this seen. The one stop shops are very good. My last mole had been horribly itching and tingling on and off. I needed it out! Lucky for me it was dysplastic not cancerous. Good luck for your appointment. Hope it goes well for you. Suggest someone takes you there and back. I couldn't have driven not just because of where my surgery was but also I felt a bit sick after the anaesthetic (I had 3 lesions removed the last time in one go – they might check you over completely not just the toe)

  • Great and thank you! I just want rid of it now and thanks for the positive thoughts!

  • Thank you for replying- I'm too far away for a taxi- it's about a 50 minute drive with no bus service as such. It's more because if using my foot on the pedal and where the mole is that it would be a bit silly to try to drive a long way home and I knock it about - I'm going to ask my daughter to drive just to be on the safe side. I wasnt going to tell her as she's already anxious enough about her dad but I'll just tell a little white lie.

    thanks for replying
