My dad has potential small intestinal cancer and liver

I'm 24 years old and I'm in pieces that my 59 year old dad has had abdominal pains for 6 weeks. The doctors put it down to constipation and said because he has no blood in his poo he doesn't have cancer. Anyway I made him demand for a CT scan which showed that he has a 6cm lump in his duodenum(top part) and something else in his liver.

Im in bits and absolutely shocked. I don't know what to do with myself. The wait for further investigation on the nhs is 2 weeks  or more. We have decided to go privately as we are so close as a family and decided to all try and pay for this as we are all so worried.

He is waiting for a CT scan and endoscopy. He is in pain but not too bad and still eating, walking and exercising as normal.

All I can see is negative stories at the moment and it's just making me feel really sad about this whole situation. Please can someone help.

  • Hi Rhea12,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm very sorry to hear what your dad is going through at the moment. I'm sure this must be incredibly difficult for all of you and I know the uncertainty is tough.

At the moment it sounds as if you're waiting for further information, so I hope that comes soon either via the NHS route or private. Once you have the answers you will at least know any next steps that may be needed.

Try to avoid Googling answers as this will rarely be helpful and often only increases worry. However this forum can hopefully provide some support.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Google is not your friend in this until you have an official diagnosis and even then you have to be careful. The NHS must see cancer patients within 2 weeks and my father recently went through something similar and he was rushed through every department imaginable as his wasn't such good news. If time was not on your fathers side I would be shocked if they were wasting any as that is not usually the way of any doctors in this situation.

I hope the news is positive, please remember worst case scenario if it is the big C it is not an automatic death sentence these days. He seems to be doing the usual human actions ok such as eating and exercising and they are all great signs!

When you know more we are here to support you! x
