Line indent in breast

I felt I needed to post my story to try and help others if they have the same issue as myself and offer some sort of reassurance.

I have always been breast aware and check myself monthly.....albeit more hands on checks rather than visual checks. I am 47 years old.

I noticed a line type indent in my breast, which appeared more pronounced when I flexed my chest or raised my arms. This was definitely not normal for me. I also thought I felt a soft moveable lump underneath the indent.

I visited my GP who who confirmed my concerns, although she said she felt no lump just a ropey type of area underneath. The earliest I could be seen was the 19th of April, exactly two weeks away.

I felt sick with worry over the last few days, could barely eat or sleep and my anxiety was through the roof.

I decided to pay to go private and I was seen within 3 hours of making an enquiry tonight. It was great news!! I had a mammogram on both breasts and ultrasound on both breasts. They confirmed I have several harmless cysts in both breasts, too small to even feel. I wouldn't have even known they were there. No issues with the concerning area.

The consultant confirmed everything was fine and sometimes these types of indents occur for no apparent reason, although he put mine down to harmless fibrocystic breast changes with ligament changes. What I see now going forward is normal for me, and could change in the future with weight loss/gain. The bill came to £1000, but it was the best money ever spent as I couldn't deal with waiting until the19th of April.

They said it was the right thing to do to get checked as they need to check nothing was under the indent pulling on it.

My advice would be to make sure your breast checks are visual aswell as hands on and don't delay to seek help if needed.

I hope my story helps somebody else who finds themself in a similar position. Thankfully there are good outcomes, even when you convince yourself of the opposite.

  • Hello Rubyduby

I just wanted to post to say I'm so pleased to hear that your breast changes were nothing to be concerned about and to thank you for sharing your story.

As you've mentioned, I'm sure that your positive outcome will offer reassurance and support to other women who find themselves in a similar situation in the future.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi can I ask how you go down the private route please? I have an appointment but not till 4th may asked to be referred to an out of area hospital just waiting to see what date I get if still as long of a wait I'll be looking at going private but not sure how? X

  • Hi, I literally just googled private hospitals in my area. I phoned the nearest one up, explained I had an NHS appointment but I couldn't wait that long. You don't even need a GP referral. They took my details and I was sat in the consultants room two hours later and sent for tests and received results that night. If you have no private health insurance, they take your card details, although they go through prices beforehand with you before going ahead with any tests. Once my results came back all clear, I called up the hospital and cancelled my NHS appointment. Hope this helps. X
  • Hi,

I have just recently noticed a line indent in my right breast so am extremely worried and making an appt with g.p monday.

Could I please ask who you went to see privately please?

Dont think I would be able to wait for long for an appointment as I struggle with severe anxiety without the worry of possible breast cancer.

Glad all was ok with you. And yes ive already terrified myself with google.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Mandyj,

I'm sorry to read you are going through this. Pointless telling you not to worry as I know you will be. The hospital I went to was xxxxx. It was literally a Google search and the first one I contacted, which could see me straight away.  Ask your GP if it looks like fibrocystic breast changes? I'm almost 49 now, so perimenopaual. I still have the ident, but I was reassured it was normal for me. Hope it's good news for you aswell.

  • Thanks for letting me know and replying so quickly.

Much appreciated. Will provide update as and when.

    Thanking you

    Kind regards

  • Hi how did you get on, I also have a line indent with what feels like a hard vein under it, rooting down to my nipple. I have a hospital appointment next Friday! Really worried it.

  • Hi I have found a horizontal line indent  underneath my right breast. It’s not noticeable when I lift my arm or with arms relaxed at side. But when I flex/ tighten my chest muscles I can see it in a certain light. I went to GP who could see the line dent but could not feel any lumps and no glands under armpit. She referred me to breast clinic which I have an appointment next Thursday. I am worried sick especially after reading all the horror stories on google, so was reassured after reading your story. I am 47 and also perimenopausal and on Hrt for this. Could I just ask what was your indent like? What direction was it and was/ is it still noticeable only when you flex?

  • Hi, I have this as well and am so worried. I just keep reading about lumps rather than hard lines so not sure what this could be. How did you get on?
