Bladder Cancer - CT Scan tomorrow

Good afternoon everyone, I am a 58 year old female and about 3 weeks ago I had a day of weeing blood. Not just a drop but to the point where my wee was a very dark red. I had no pain and there was no stinging.

This tested negative for any infection and was sent off, by my GP, to the lab to be tested. No visible blood since. I am now on the 2 week urgent cancer pathway, with my CT scan tomorrow morning followed by a flexi cystoscopy next Thursday.

Could cancer cells shown up in my urine sample ?

I am trying to convince myself, and those few who do know, that it is nothing. I have been 'educating' myself on the signs/symptoms of Bladder Cancer and what to expect from the tests.

Has anybody had a 'surprise' diagnosis of bladder cancer ?

One thing I have read is that it is a common cancer in men but more lethal in women.

Any words of advice, comfort or support wold be gratefully received.

  • Hi AmberGrace and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

It must have been scary to come across the blood in your urine but I'm glad you haven't had any since.

Unfortunately I can't answer your question about cancer cells showing up in urine but our team of cancer nurses may be able to help so if you'd like to get their thoughts on this do give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will get back to you soon but in the meantime we're thinking of you and will have our fingers crossed for good news.

If you'd like to find out more about your flexi-cystoscopy next week, just click here.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Steph for your reply.

I will certainly give your nurses a call on Monday.

  • Hi Amber,

I'm a 37M, I passed two small clots in my urine about a week apart with none since but have had abdominal discomfort on and off. The doctor at my GPs I spoke to was an ex-urologist helping out the day I rang so luckily he took it seriously and pushed me forward for necessary checks within two weeks. I had ultrasound first which was all clear as were urinalysis and blood tests but had a flexible cystoscopy (luckily i didn't realise this was what my appointment was for otherwise i think i would've been crazy nervous) on Tuesday and we found a small tumour seemingly in its early stages. Waiting on appointments for a TURBT now. Its been surreal and as you'd expect plenty of anxiety involved but this is much easier to manage if you think one step at a time only.

Good luck with the CT scan, hopefully all is well!

  • Hi Ben37

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry to hear that they found a tumour but on the + side, it's in the early stages and now that you are 'in the system' things will be rolling.

The CT scan was uneventful, I knew I wouldn't be getting any results so that wasn't a surprise but even so I wanted to say to them 'What can you see ?'

I've been told that I will be given the results of the findings after my cystoscopy on Thursday. I know that I'll be tearful whatever the outcome, from relief or fear.

I will be taking some time out each day to try and do a bit of meditation and clearing my head, just to think of 'nothing' will be good.

I will keep you updated, keep yourself safe
