Possible cervical cancer?

Hi everyone, I am worried sick at the moment.  I had a smear test last week (performed by a doc) and she did an internal as well, then asked me if I have breakthrough bleeding or discharge, which I don't.  She said a bit of my cervix is a different colour and has referred me to the gynaecology dept at local hospital on 2 week wait.  In my absolute panic I didn't really ask her much else.

As a bit of background, at my last smear 4 years ago the nurse mentioned I had an ectropion cervix, which she said was probably caused by the pill.  I haven't been on the pill since about that time, so it can't be that.

I would be in a panic anyway but the thing that is compounding it is, I have had awful lower back pain for months, which I thought was from working at home and not sitting correctly.  Now I see it's a symptom of cervical cancer.

I have two children aged 9 and 11 and I am terrified of leaving them without a mum.

Does anyone have any similar experience or can offer advice?  Should I ring the docs when they reopen, to ask more questions?

Thanks for reading, Tammy

  • Hey Tammy,

I noticed you haven't had a reply yet so I just wanted to let you know your post has been seen.

It's always a tad scary when a referral has been made but if you can, try not to jump to any conclusions about your symptoms. Much easier said than done I know but they could be an indication or something less serious than cancer and as you'll see here, 9 out of 10 people referred on the two week pathway are not diagnosed with cancer.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will share their experiences and advice with you soon.

    Kind regards,
