Called in for blood test tomorrow

Hello,

My first time posting in here but I wonder if I could get some advice.

3 weeks ago I was called into hospital for a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. The colonoscopy seemed to be clear but they noticed some displasia from possible Barrett's in the endoscopy. I was called in 2 weeks after for a second endoscopy as the doctor said the change in cells can range from normal to cancer and he wanted to check where I was on the scale.

After the endoscopy the specialist said that things didn't look too bad but he had taken 7 biopsies. If they came back ok they would be in touch and I would be brought back in in 6months.

I have been extremely nauteous since the last endoscopy but after speaking to the doctor he told m to take motelium and it seems to have eased slightly.

Cut to this evening when the hospital rang me and they want me to go in for blood tests tomorrow. I am scared and nervous. Could this be for the them to check cancer markers or something else.

I just feel everything has been very rushed along. I am going on public health care in Ireland everthing takes an age and all of this has taken place over the last 6 weeks when I had initially visited my gp with a small lump on my left side. Which she believed to be a fatty mass..

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.

  • Hello Ruth

I'm sorry to hear that you've been undergoing some investigations recently. We know that this period of waiting for results and further appointments can be really worrying and it's understandable that you've been feeling anxious about things.

I hope that the team was able to give you some reassurance about the blood tests when you attended yesterday. Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long now for an appointment for the results and the Consultant will be able to discuss any treatment or monitoring that may be required.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thank you for your reply, unfortunately it wasn't good news. I have been diagnosed with cancer in my osephogus. They think it is early stages but I go in for my ct, pet and eus in the coming week to see the extent of it and come up with a treatment plan.

It all seems a bit surreal at the moment to be honest.

    Regards

    Ruth

  • I am so sorry to hear that Ruth. It's good though that it is early stages and hopefully you can start your treatment soon. I hope your scans go well next week and that you don't have to wait too long afterwards to start your treatment.

Perhaps when you feel ready, you could start a new thread in our 'Newly Diagnosed' topic area? There you will hopefully get to meet others who have also been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and had similar tests too. It helps to talk to others who are or have been in a similar place so I just wanted you to know that you are not alone. We are all here for you anytime you need to talk to others who understand what you are currently going through.

Our cancer nurses are also just a free phone call away so don't hesitate to give them a ring on 0808 800 4040 if you have any questions or just wanted to talk things through with them - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

I will definitely have a look at that thread and thank you for your concern and information.
