Cervical biopsy sent to lead pathologist for further tests

Hi,

To cut a long story short I'm eight weeks post op after having LLETZ & Diathermy Ablation on my cervix.

At week 3 - results CIN III with positive margins discuss at MDT (precancerous cells but likely to still have some on my cervix)

Discussion at MDT was two weeks ago. I called today as I've not heard anything. My nurse, consultant & secretaries consultant are all on holiday for Easter. But after further investigation I have been told that the colposcopy pathology MDT meeting decided my biopsy required to be examined by a lead pathologist in a specialist hospital. After which it will be discussed at oncology MDT, usually Fridays, so because of Bank Holiday Friday it won't be for another week.

I have searched forums and cannot find any record of biopsies being sent to a specialist lead pathologist.

I wish someone could explain in layman's terms what this means. Do they think I have cancer? What other reason might they have for taking this step?

The secretary that spoke to me was chirpy yesterday and really sympathetic and sorrowful when giving me the news today. It's left me feeling so worried.

  • It’s not at all unusual for a second opinion to be sought. I wouldn’t be getting hung up in the titles of the specialist who will do this. It’s a good thing to be getting a second opinion if there is any doubts at all about results, especially if you don’t have clear margins.

  • Hi,

can I just ask if you had the Lletz following a hpv positive smear? I'm due to get my biopsy results tomorrow which they refused to give me over the phone, I read somewhere that it may be investigated if it contradicts your smear test result. Mine came back hpv negative but had the colposcopy as was having abnormal bleeding so wondering whether that could be the reason as to why it's being looked into? X

  • Hi Ashleigh,

I hope all goes well for you tomorrow.

They usually go to be discussed at MDT colposcopy if there are two stages in difference between your smear and your biopsy. E.g. Smear showed borderline cell changes but biopsy showed CIN II. The other second most common reason is if there is CGIN.

My letter with my biopsy result back in February said my biopsy was CIN III, the same as my routine smear result (all previous smears showed no issues and my smear was on time, and I don't have symptoms of cancer).

I spoke with a colposcopy nurse to help me understand why my results went to colposcopy mdt and she said it was because my margins weren't clear and I'd been given a second treatment of diathermy ablation on the day of my LLETZ so they had to discuss if I should have more treatment or not.

The day after the mdt I called and the nurse said I'd get a letter in the post.

So I was expecting to have a letter sent saying next smear (test of cure) in 6 months or potentially being booked for another colposcopy to check that all abnormal cells had indeed been removed.

Two weeks later and I still hadn't heard anything so I called back. Eventually bring told that at MDT they decided it may be more than just precancerous cells and so they'd like the lead pathologist in my closest city to do further testing and it will then be discussed at an oncology mdt, which takes place every Friday. The tests usually take a couple of weeks but as its Bank Holiday Friday its been pushed to next week.

I just feel very alone with it all. There's no one to explain what 'more than precancerous cells' exactly means. Do they mean cancer? Do they mean something entirely different that I've never heard of? I wish I had been told specifics.

I thought the period of worrying was over, but it seems to be 10X worse now

I really hope your results tomorrow go well. Please do let me know how you get on x

  • Thankyou for your reply,

I can understand your worry I'd be the same but it also could be positive as if it was cancerous cells surely they would tell you that they suspect it could be? I've also read that you can have multiple graded cin cells so maybe also cin1/2?

I know I feel alone also as I can't find many people that have been referred but their smear was normal so I'm not really sure what to expect tomorrow. I was told my results would be sent by post but instead I've been called in so that doesn't fill me with too much hope.

The waiting is horrendous but you just have to keep positive, il update you tomorrow and definitely let me when you hear more too x

  • Oodles of luck for tomorrow. I've known one person who was called in and she presumed it would be bad news but it was to tell her that everything went as expected and all her CIN II was removed. It's really confusing that they operate differently in different areas, even with how they word their letters.

Keeping everything crossed for you for tomorrow x

  • Hi everyone,

Just to confirm I was given the news of a cervical cancer diagnosis on 14th April (10 weeks after my first LLETZ). Apparently it was sent to the hospitals lab for testing, they sent it for a second opinion but there was still uncertainty so it was sent to a specialist pathologist who only looks at cervical cells and they confirmed I had cancer.

On the 26th April I had my second LLETZ. As my cancer is difficult to diagnose my biopsy will go through the same process again, so I'm still waiting for next results which will determine what kind of hysterectomy I have.
