Urgent referral for lump on neck

Hi everyone,

Like a lot of people who post here I am just really after some advice and some words of wisdom from people who have been/currently going through something similar rather then scaring myself half to death through Google.

About 10 weeks ago I noticed a large lump on the side of my neck, it's visible when I look in the mirror. I left it for a couple of weeks as I know lymph nodes can often swell, went to the docs about 8 weeks ago now, he said it felt like a lymph node, nothing to worry about unless it didn't go away after 8 weeks. Well it didn't go away, so he sent me for blood tests that all came back normal. By this point I had another three lumps come up, one on the same side just below my ear, another on the opposite side just below my jawline and the fourth just above my collarbone on the same side.

My doctor decided to send me for an urgent ultrasound referral, which I have read should take about two weeks normally, but I don't know if this is the case at the moment due to everything with Covid. Anyway, I'm concerned as it will be two weeks ago that I saw him this Friday and I have yet to have a letter from the hospital. Is this normal? Do I need to ring my surgery and make sure the referral has gone through, or should I just try and be a bit more patient? I don't want to be harrassing them as I know they're busy, when it's just a case of I need to wait a bit longer.

  • Hi.

I've only recently posted myself and in a very similar situation as you except my doctor won't send me for a scan which I wish she would. I was reffered to breast clinic first because it was an underarm lymphnode then my neck lumps followed 2 weeks later and was reffered to a haematologist who wants me to watch and wait for another 3 months which I'm unhappy to do as I've already waited 3 months since it all started.

If i was you I would call back your GP & make sure it has definetley has been sent as my GP sent me for a chest xray. I heard nothing 2 weeks later i phoned the hospital too tell them I still haven't relieved a letter to be told I wasn't on the system..phoned the doctors back & she had forgot to put it through

I hope you get awnsers soon x

  • Hey hope you're doing well. I live in Surrey and an urgent referral is different to the 2 week referral.

The best thing for you to do is to call the Drs and find out if the referral was made through the 2 week one or if it was done as urgent, then maybe call the hospital, as to speak to ultrasound appointments and see if they've definitely received your referral and if they have a date booked in for you yet.. you can then ask if there has been any cancellations if you'd like to try to get your appointment a bit earlier. I hope that helps

    Good luck x

  • Thank you for the advice, I didn't want to be bothering them for nothing but I've just phoned my GP and the receptionist can't find a referral on my notes, so I need to ring again tomorrow and speak to the doctor again to get a referral sorted. I'm so frustrated right now.

  • Oh no!.. how frustrating for you! Waiting and not knowing is so horrible hey.

I hope it all gets sorted tomorrow. It would probably be a good idea to ask if it's an urgent referral or a 2 week one when you speak to them tomorrow.

    All the best x

  • Hi

My first referral was for an ultrasound scan following a large lump on right hand side of neck.  I had many scans and biopsies after.  When ultrasound was performed the Radiologist wanted to do a biopsy but as I had drove myself to hospital he could not (had I been aware of this would have took someone).  I would try and get an ultrasound biopsy to start with.  If all good no worries.  But if they want more scans, Contrast MRI for example, it ca be quite a long wait between each one.  If you can afford private for the ultrasound biopsy, I would do this.

Please feel free to any more questions.

    Good Luck x

  • Hi. I am currently in my 3rd week of waiting for my 2 week referral for suspected breast cancer. I was told they are delayed and will be a few weeks yet. I hope you get sorted as it's not nice with the extended waiting times. I think the 2 week referral is the same as an urgent one.

  • Sorry for not updating sooner, thank you all for your advice so far. I rang the hospital and they have got my referral, I am on the waiting list, but when I asked how long I could expect to wait the receptionist wouldn't tell me, just said that she'd note that I had chased it up. It's been three weeks of waiting now, and I've had more nodes come up on the right side, where the initial lump started, underneath my jaw. So just more waiting for now, but at least I know for sure i'm in the system, and have updated my phone number with them so I'll get a text about my appointment as well as a letter, as that was another thing I was worried about with the post being so terrible at the moment.
