Not tonsil cancer

I'd like to share my experiences for the benefit of people who, like me in recent weeks, are frantically googling and becoming more and more depressed about their prospects.  I hope that's OK - I know I am very fortunate.  I've been following this forum for several weeks.

I had a problem with post nasal drip, and eventually got an appointment with ENT.  They incidentally found an enlarged tonsil on one side and I was fast tracked for MRI.  This found a suspicious mass.  I saw a cancer surgeon who told me he didn't know what it was but that it could very well be cancer.  I then very rapidly had a tonsillectomy and a biopsy.

I got the results today and am so incredibly relieved.  Basically, I had chronic tonsilitis!  I don't quite understand why it was so hard to diagnose, but I didn't have any symptoms and maybe that's unusual, I don't know. I'd assumed that MRIs were fantastically accurate but the consultant I saw today told me that it hadn't been possible to distinguish between a tumour and inflammation.

Anyhow, I can hardly believe that I don't have tonsil cancer.  It's all I've thought about for the past couple of months and you see so little about tests turning out negative when you google, so I'm just posting this for a tiny bit of balance.  My thoughts are with everyone who has not been as fortunate as I have been today, though.

  • That's great news Lizziebeth

I'm really pleased you had a good outcome and I'm sure your post will really help others who currently find themselves in a similar situation.

    HI Lizziebeth,

Thank you so much for sharing your good news. We always find it heartening to hear when someone has a good outcome. It is always reassuring for those going through tests that theree are god results as well as bad.

I sincerely hope that things continue to go well for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi!

I am so pleased to see this outcome!! I'm currently struggling with something myself.

I've only just turned 25 and have just been seen by a maxfax surgeon after multiple episodes of 'tonsillitis' I appeared to have the white spots but antibiotics wouldn't smudge it. Over a year later one tonsil is still very inflamed

I'm having urgent surgery in two weeks for a diagnosis and honestly I'm super scared so it's lovely to see such nice news

    all the best x
