Ovarian concerns

Hi all,

I am seeking out stories from those who may have a similar starting point to me.

I saw my GP back in Dec because of irregular bleeding and discomfort during sex. By Feb I had a referral and through a colposcopy, a lesion on my cervix through prior treatment (letz) for CIN3 was identified and sealed. I thought this was the solution but an ultrasound found a 50x70x80cm cyst on one of my ovaries. My CA125 levels were checked and I waited for a second ultrasound a month later. My CA125 came back as raised (85) and the cyst hadn’t reduced in size.

The consultant said I had options. I could treat through laparoscopy or leave and see if things improved on it’s own.

Apparently it could be endometriosis. I have no pain but the cyst seems to be blood filled.

I think in writing this, I’ve convinced myself, I should probably get it out for peace of mind but I also am wondering, since it’s causing me no real bother, am I putting my body through something unnecessary? Or sinister or not, should I be whipping this thing out? I’ve never had surgery (thankfully) and am all forms of petrified. Probably less about the procedure and recovery, more about the needles, GA and prospect of infection so don’t want to do something unnecessarily either!

Thank you!

Claire

  • Hi, having had several ovarian cysts removed I would say it is not fun but definitely straightforward as ops go. It depends on your age and fertility status how you deal with it. I was post menopausal and worried about cancer also it had twisted so causing pain, very happy to get rid. I had one in my 20's which was huge but painless but had to go in the end. I still managed to have one child but it did reduce my fertility, apparently it doesn't always but you need to discuss that with consultant if relevant to you. Your ca-125 can be raised for a number of reasons and you might opt to monitor it. Fluid filled cysts are more likely to disappear but might take several cycles to do so. Have you had a trans-vaginal ultrasound to get better pictures ? That might be worth asking for.
if you do decide to go for surgery be reassured it is a simple op usually, take extra b12 to counter effects of general anaesthetic and see it as taking care of yourself. Keep asking questions.  Best wishes xx

  • Thank you so much for replying [@Maigg999]‍. Sorry to hear you've had to go through it more than once but I'm glad you were still able to conceive.

I'm late 30s and apparently it seems to be blood filled. I've had 2x trans-vaginal ultrasounds, that's how it was identified that it hadn't reduced in size. It has only been one cycle though.

Thank you for your reassurance and advice, it's really appreciated and is making me feel more balanced about next steps.

    Claire xx

  • No problem, let me know how you get on, no one talks about this stuff enough, we are supposed to just get on with it but I know how frightening it can be thinking the worst. Feel free to message if it helps.

  • Thank you . So far no updates but at least I know I'm in the system now. It's frustrating to just be told "it might be cancer but hopefully not". However, at least I know an answer is on the horizon. I think for peace of mind, getting it out and checked will at least mean I know one way or another!! Thank you for being supportive.
