Do biopsies hurt?

Hello, I have been referred to the breast clinic for a lump under my nipple/areola. I'm not sure if they will biopsy it for sure but I want to prepare myself incase they do. What I want to know is does it hurt? I'm petrified of pain... even though I have had 3 children  and it makes Me nervous even more because I have to go on my own! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Xxx

  • Thank you @jolamine, I will keep busy (work will make sure of that for me lol). Thanks for caring.

    @Mumma123,

Hope your appointment is through soon, if you don't hear by day 10 I would maybe call your GP to check the referral went through OK.

Thank you, it was actually OK. Obviously it's the unknown isn't it. But my experience hopefully will give you some sort of guide. So I was only there for an hour and half. First was seen by a consultant who examined both breasts which was good as I had only reported the right breast. I then had to wait for an ultrasound and was told as I am under 40 a mammogram wouldn't be necessary although they do on the odd occasion do one. I went in for the ultrasound which showed the lump on the breast, she then got the doctor to review and came back and said they would do the biopsy and it was done there and then. Obviously clinics do differ. After the biopsy I had to wait and spoke to the consultant again before leaving. I have to wait to hear about my next appointment which I was told would be 2 weeks time.

Just to comment on your question about the lump moving, I have never noticed mine move. But last night lying in bed I thought let me feel it now, I have only ever felt it standing or sitting up. I couldn't find it - I did eventually but had to press pretty hard. But took me by surprise.

    Keep us updated xxx

  • Thankyou, with the Easter bank holiday coming up I don't think I will hear anything until atleast Tuesday!
Thankyou it's very helpful to know what sort of time scale and things to expect while I am there. I know everybody is different and every appointment is different too.
did they mention to you what they thought I might be?

it's a strange one isn't it when you can't find it but you know it's still there! Xx

  • Oh of course, if you don't hear by Tuesday definately contact your GP.

My appointment letter did say allow up to 3-4hours. That may be for some and I suppose had I have needed a mammogram too I would have been there longer.

Yes, we'll when the ultrasound was done done lady said it didn't look typical of anything they see regular so she took the images out to the doctor and thats when they came back and said they would do a biopsy but that they thought it may be a cluster of fibroadenoma's. She did say though obviously they can't be sure and need to check it under a microscope.

Yes it is weird and I had never though to check lying down, it's only that I was in bed last night and thought actually I'll probably be lying down on a couch when they examine me that I thought to check it then realised it was harder to find.

I know your original post was about the pain side of the biopsy- it didn't hurt at all. But my breast is a bit tender tonight - thought you'd appreciate the heads up. They did say it may feel tender and will probably bruise too.

    Hope you hear soon xx

  • I definitely will!

oh gosh that's so long, hopefully I am in and out with no worries haha.

that sounds positive then, just taking precautions to confirm what they think.

oh no bless you. I hope you are not in too much pain, keep on top of pain relief and lots of rest, hopefully it will ease quickly.

Thankyou for the heads up! Xx

  • Yes i think the 3-4hour window was probably the norm before social distancing and covid existed. Hopefully you'll have a similar experience to me.

Yes I just hope they're right on their suspicions, I'm trying to keep positive and hopefully the results reflect that.

Oh thank you, not really painful as such but if I lean my arm against it or touch it its tender. But yes I'll keep taking paracetamol. Have a feeling I'll struggle tonight as I tend to sleep on my tummy lol.

All the best to you xxx

  • Yes i think you are right! Hopefully!

positivity is key! Hopefully you won't wait too long to find out your results, keep me updated!

hopefukly it doesn't get worse for you! I'm a tummy sleeper too, so comfortable lol xx

  • All the best, pop back and let me know how you get on after.

Yes positivity is definately key. Thanks, I will let you know.

Oh thank you, yes I always sleep on my tummy, very comfy. Don't think my right breast will make it comfy tonight though lol xx

  • Hi [@Syl85]‍

    how are you today?

I received my appointment by letter this morning, it's on Monday 12th April. So just over a week to wait, and just over 2 weeks from referral. To tell you I'm scared now is an understatement. I have had breast pain in both breast all day, some pain in my nipple and itchy armpits. Now I have the appointment I think my mind is going to wander again and the anxiety is setting in, the thought of doing this by myself terrifies me! Xx

  • Hi @Mumma123,

Surprisingly fine. I dont seem to have any bruising or pain. Its just a bit tender if I touch it. Thank you for asking.

Oh glad you have your appointment through, the waiting will be horrible. Try and take each day as it comes. Have you told anybody? Perhaps also call and ask them if somebody can accompany you and mention you are anxious. I'm not sure if it's even allowed with the covid regulations. But it's worth an ask. I hope your appointment goes smoothly. It's very nerve wracking when you are in there xxx

  • hey, the local anaesthetic is like the tiniest scratch and then you wont feel anything :) it was an absolute breeze! I went on my own as well, the staff were so good and one of them even held my hand when i was afraid.
