Chest mass and enlarged lymph nodes

Hi, just looking for some support and advise.

I am a 26 year old female. I went to GP at beginning of Jan as I was short of breath, really tired and had chest pains. They prescribed inhalers thinking it was asthma and sent me for a chest x-ray to rule out anything else. Unfortunately the inhalers had not effect. When I had the chest x-ray they discovered "something" on my x-rays and sent me for a CT scan to investigate further. Unfortunately when I went for the CT scan they were unable to get me cannulated as I have rubbish veins. But they did the scan without contrast. The morning after my GP rang me and told me they had found an 8cm mass undernest my chest plate and fluid on heart and bit of fluid on my lung. They have referred me to a respiratory specialist consultant which is part of a multi disciplinary team. They sent me for another CT scan with contrast and this mass was still visible. They then sent me for a PET scan and this flagged up an other active areas including an enlarged lymph node under my right collar bone. They then sent me for a fine needle biopsy of this node with ultrasound. They said this was the easiest to access and would start with this but will probably need to have a biopsy of the chest mass also as this was showing active. They have also had around 10 blood samples testing for various bits. Now I am in the realm of waiting as the biopsy was last Wednesday and we still have no results back as they get sent to another hospital for analysis. I suppose what I'd like to know is of anyone else had similar experiences? In my head the mass would be scooped out and I would be on my way but I'm not sure if it's something more sinister like a thymoma or a lymphoma. I'm still having horrible chest pains and pains on my right shoulder, rib cage, collar bone and neck. I've also noticed over the last week my throat has been incredibly sore and dry, the lymphs feel enlarged in my neck and my breast are extremely tender strangely. I'm feeling really anxious as being referred to MND team and PET scans all see to be associated with cancers. I am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and it turned out to be a moderate infection or something not as serious? I'm not sure if I should be worried or not!

Sorry for this massive post, I guess I'm just wanting to talk about it all with other going through similar things

  • Hello Rosiedeege

I'm sorry to hear about all that you've had to deal with recently. It's obviously an incredibly difficult time for you with the uncertainty about what is actually going on and what the next steps will be in terms of treatment.

It sounds as if the hospital is being really thorough and hopefully you won't have to wait too much longer to hear from the Consultant. Have they given you an appointment date or an indication about when you may have some news?

We know that this period of waiting can be really worrying and it can often help to talk things through with someone. I'd certainly think about giving our team of nurses a call. I'm sure they'll be happy to listen and to try and answer any questions you may have. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040. Do give them a call for some support.

Keep in touch Rosie and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for coming back to me so quickly!

My consultant runs a clinic on Wednesdays and Fridays so I'm hoping I will be in on Wednesday clinic to discuss results and agree in the next steps. It's such an incredibly frustrating time waiting for the results. I did not realise that you had nurses available to talk to! That is incredible and something I will do tomorrow!

I am still hoping they come back to me and tell me it's all disappeared now and I'm off the hook.... wishful thinking, i know!

  • Hi Rosiedeege

Keep staying positive and I hope that you have some news this week. It may be with the bank holiday on Friday that the clinic isn't running but I will keep my fingers crossed that you hear soon!

Definitely give the nurses a call tomorrow. I'm sure you'll find it helpful and let us know when you have an update.

    Best wishes,

  • So I had a meeting with one of the consultants from the MDT and a specialist lung nurse yesterday.

They said the fine needle biopsy they took didn't collect enough cells and although there were some abnormal cells within it, there wasn't enough to give a diagnosis. So unfortunately we are no further forward which is annoying. They did go through the PET scan images with me which was helpful. It showed the enlarged lymph nodes glowing brightly and as was the big mass underneath the chest plate. However, there was another areas that had shown as a hot spot with was my left adrenal gland (next to my kidneys). The consultants think these are all linked. The next step is going to be a core needle biopsy of the lymph nodes under my collar bone and then another agonising wait for a diagnosis. If it's inconclusive again, they will do a CT guided biopsy of the adrenal gland and if that's no good, the final straw will be the main mass which is general anaesthetic and more invasive. I'm feeling very frustrated that we don't seem to be any further.  What seemed to be a "simple" case of breathlessness has turned into a big job that's involving all sorts now. The consultant was very honest and said they couldn't tell what it was just yet. Infection was briefly mentioned but cancers and lymphoma was mentioned much more. So now I have a longer wait due to Easter bank holidays.

  • Hi Rosie

I'm so sorry to hear that you're still in limbo. It's incredibly frustrating when this happens and I can understand that you just want answers.

It sounds as if the team has a plan in place to try and get those answers as soon as they can and I really do hope that the core needle biopsy is successful in giving them the information that they need.

Keep in touch with us here. Offload that frustration and we will do our best to support you through things.

    Sending you my best wishes,

  • Hello,

I know it has now been a while since you posted, but I came across this forum whilst anxiously awaiting my biopsy results. I could have wrote your post myself - it's extremely similar apart from I don't have any pain. I'm a 25 year old female, with swollen lymph nodes in neck, which uncovered a mass on my chest (after various x ray and CT scans). Please could you let me know what your outcome was? Thank you x

  • Hi,

I'm sorry to hear this. Unfortunately I was diagnosed after my post with Hodgkin's lymphoma. I had 6 months of chemotherapy and I was in remission for a while. Unfortunately again, I fell ill with similar symptoms although they were rapidly progressing this time and I've just been diagnosed with non Hodgkin's lymphoma. This has ment I've had to start chemotherapy again.

I hope you don't have to wait too long for your biopsy results and I hope it's something that can be resolved quickly for you!
