Signs of breast cancer?

Hello everyone,

I don't mean to offend anyone if my problem isn't nearly as significant as some people (which I definitely know it isn't). I just want some knowledge on what I'm dealing with. Im an overly anxious person, so some informtion could really help. Thank you!

A few years back (I am 23, so I was a teenager back then) I started feeling a slight throbbing pain my right breast. As far as I can remeber my right breast has always been bigger and tougher so I paid no attention to it. The pain also went away after some time. Fast forward to now, I've been urged to do a self check exam because I've never actually done so before. Sure enough, I found a small lump in the bottom part of my breast, under the nippple. There's also a dry, crusty piece of skin on my right nipple. My nipples have always been different, my left one being slightly inverted than my right so this wasn't much of a concern for me (or perhaps it should be).

I'd like to add that for the past year I've had slight problems with my body such as a fast and stronger heartbeat, a "phleghm" like feeling my throat that causes some difficuty breathing, shortness of breath, fatigue, headaches, and just overall weakness. Quite recently my left arm has started to feel numb as well as my legs which is really worrying for me.

I have been diagnsed as anemic and am now taking medication for it. I understand that some of the signs I have stated above is linked to anemia but I thought I would state them anyway just in case.

After discovering the lump, I went to my gp where she felt another lump (same breast) and she reffered me to a breast clinic which I am currently waiting for an appointment. This will probably sound ridiculous to a lot of people, I tend to think of the worst possible outcome. I've never been the strongest of person, I've always been very frail and weak and for the past year I've had more symptoms that adds to the equation. Now since Covid happened, I associated these symptoms with covid, I did get my heart examined just in case but they found nothing.

I am panicking so much and I really don't know who else to talk to just in case this lump is cancer. Adding that to my other symptoms, I can't help but think of the possibility that it has spread. I did some googling which is stupid I know, and now I'm scared. I'd like to hear other people's perspective on this, if I am being delusional to think the worst.

Again, thanks a lot for your help.

  • Hello Kalabwa1234

I'm sorry to hear about the ongoing health concerns that you've had along with the recent changes that you've noticed in your breast.

You did the right thing in speaking to your GP about the breast changes and it's good to hear that you've been referred to get these checked. It is important to remember that younger women often have lumpy breasts and the majority of women who attend breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer. I'd certainly recommend giving Google a wide berth from now on as it won't give you firm answers but it will lead to you feeling more anxious about things.

You might find it helpful to have a look at the NHS Every Mind Matters website which has lots of tips and advice for managing anxiety. You could also give our team of nurses a call. I'm sure they will be able to give you some reassurance ahead of your appointment. If you would like to speak to them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for your appointment.

    Best wishes,
