Anyone currently waiting for a Oncotype DX result? I

Hi, I’m waiting for my Oncotype DX result following a lumpectomy 33mm grade 2 tumour and clear sentinel lymph nodes. I was expecting radiotherapy for 3 weeks so I am now very anxious of the thought of 6 months chemotherapy if the results show this is necessary.

Is anyone else waiting for results or recently received results from their test? I wondered how common this is?

  • Hiya

I had the oncotype test too.  I had 3 surgeries to remove a 45mm lump and get clear margins.  My was a grade 3 invasive ductal cancer ER+.  My results on oncotype test took a couple of weeks.  My score came back as 20, I have just turned 50  and so with that score the benefit of chemo was 1.6% so the side effects outweighed that benefit.   My lymph nodes were also clear.  I am not having chemo and my radiotherapy is no longer 3 weeks worth it's now 5 days as they have changed how the doses are given now.  As my cancer was grade 3 I will also be having 4 boost sessions of radio too.  Not sure if this is the same in every hospital.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Sue,

thank you for your reply. I am sorry to hear you had 3 surgeries that must have been traumatic. I am 64 so I am hoping for a score of 25 or less which I think is the point when they do not recommend chemo. How long will it be from receiving your results to when radiotherapy starts?

I have heard that higher doses are being given over a shorter time at some hospitals but at my hospital it is still 3 weeks. I have also been told I will have boost sessions at the site of the cancer but not how many.

  • Hi kay

Thank you.  To be honest I have been very lucky with all the surgeries I have had no pain at all so I have been OK with it all.  I had an apt with oncologist on the Wednesday after getting my oncotype score on the friday before.  The oncogist just had to go through everything with me with regards to chemo as although my score meant I didn't have to have chemo it was still my choice.  They went through all the side effects and my score in detail.  As I decided not to have the chemo I was then referred straight away to the hospital I had chosen for my radiotherapy.  That hospital rang me later that day to offer me an apt for the following Monday.  At that apt they went through all the info about radiotherapy, side effects, the treatment plan etc.  I then have to go for my CT planning scan next week, it would  have been this week but my wounds are still healing and being dressed.  She said that my radiotherapy will start about 3 weeks after the scan.

Try not to worry too much waiting for your results easier said than done I know.

Take care fingers crossed for you that your score comes back low.

  • Hi Sue,

I also  had no  pain after the op I was amazed but I did take the painkillers for a week, my surgeon did a reconstruction  at the same time so cannot tell and scars are in crease line so will hardly be visible.I will not have chemo unless scores are really bad, hopefully not. It’s 4 weeks today since I had my op so I think as soon as I get results back treatment should start.

Hopefully radiotherapy should not be as bad please let me know how you get on.

Just wondered if you had had your results yet.

  • Hi Sue,

No, I have an appointment at hospital on 15th April; I am concerned because I read that radiotherapy should be 4 to 6 weeks after surgery and it will be 7 weeks by the time I have this appointment and will be sometime after that before radiotherapy. I know we are waiting for Oncotype results.
