Referral to Breast Clinic and Breastfeeding

Hello.

I am awaiting a referral to the breast clinic. I am 27 with a 9 month old who I am exclusively breastfeeding.

Around 10 years ago I found a lump in my breast and had an ultrasound. This turned out to be a fibroadenoma. 10 years later and I still have it, it has changed shape and size over the years.

Around 6 weeks ago I noticed a new small cluster of lumps in my breast. Very deep, almost as if it is on my breast bone. I had it checked out by a GP and she has sent off for me to be seen by the breast clinic within 2 weeks.

Can anyone share experiences on what to expect there? Am I likely to have a biopsy?

I'm trying to avoid Google (trying!!!) but starting to feel a little anxious as I've been reading about postpartum breast cancer. The new cluster of lumps feels TOTALLY different to my fibroadenoma so I can't help but feel like it could be something sinister.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

Thank you all xxx

  • Hello aries17

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some health concerns at the moment. It's understandably a difficult time.

It's not uncommon for women who are breastfeeding to experience breast changes and it's highly likely that the lumps you've noticed are nothing to be concerned about. The large majority of women who attend breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer and it can help to try and keep that in mind.

Because of your age, it's likely that the hospital will offer you an ultrasound rather than a mammogram as younger women have dense breast tissue which makes it difficult for the mammogram to pick up changes. It may be that they feel they want to biopsy the lumps at clinic but remember that if they do it doesn't automatically mean they are worried. There's a blog here on the Breast Cancer Now website which you may find helpful.

If you'd like to have a chat with one of our team of nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040. I'm sure they will be able to offer you some support and reassurance ahead of your appointment.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.
