Smear tests after CIN3

Hi all,

I'm I have a question which I haven't been able to find an answer for on the internet and thought maybe someone here would be able to shed shone light.

After my first smear showed traces of HPV, it was tested for abnormal cells and came back with CIN3.

I had the biopsy and procedure which went well. I was told by the doctor who did the biopsy that I would need more regular smears from now on due to the chance that cells may mutate in the future.

What I don't understand is - if smear tests do not show the presence of HPV, they don't get tested any further for abnormal cells. However I have already had HPV and already had abnormal cells develop.  So on my last test where no HpV was detected- I received a letter to say all was clear. But shouldn't you be tested in case abnormal cells have come back weather you have HpV or not...if you have had it all in the past and it could return?

I hope this makes sense, it's quite hard to put into words what I am confused about.

  • Hello Sb93

I'm afraid that I don't know the answer to your question but I did find this information on the Jo's Trust website which may help

"It is possible to have cervical cell changes without having high-risk HPV. However, it is unlikely that these cell changes would develop into cervical cancer. The National Screening Committee recommended the move to HPV primary screening because it is more accurate at showing who is at higher risk of cell changes that may develop into cervical cancer."

It may be that Jo's Trust is able to further help with information if you ring their support line.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

  • I am literally having the same thoughts now. I've just had what they thought was cin2 removed. But following the biopsy on this I am now being told it was cin 3.

I have the same concerns about cin reoccurring without hpv on my future smears. Especially if the hpv clears up between smears or if they haven't removed all the abnormal cells from this time around but my hpv clears up.

I'm hoping to push for thorough checks, if not see if I can have it done privately

  • Hi

did anyone get an answer with regards to this?

I was a CiN3 and CGin and my last smear was only tested for HpV I'm due another this week.

why do not they not test the cells and just for hpv?

  • Hi Ssjcox and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry you haven't had a reply from anyone on this thread. I can see from looking at these member's profiles that they haven't been on the forum since making their posts in March and April last year so you may not get to find out what happened.

If you'd like to find out more about the cervical screening process and why only HPV is tested, do give our cancer nurses a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very knowledgeable in this field so hopefully talking this through with them will help put your mind at ease and give you the answers you're seeking.

I hope your smear test went well last week and that the results bring good news when they come through.

    Kind regards,
