Raised platelet count

Hello,

I have had my results back from a blood test, I have a raised platelet count and low ferritin levels. I have had abnormal menstraul bleeding for 4 months now and have a lump on my vulvar I am due to have a scan tomorrow. I was just wondering if anyone else has had raised platelets and an indication of what this can be? I can't get a telephone appointment until 12th April so I just went off what the receptionist told me. I am tired and exhausted all the time which I have been prescribed iron tablets for an iron deficiency

  • Hello Sophxxx,

How did your scan go yesterday? I hope that you have a few more answers by now and that the scan will shed some light on what is causing all this. Hopefully you will also hear from others on the forum who have raised plaitelets and low ferritin levels and they will be able to tell you more about what it meant for them. Obviously these test results may have different meanings and implications for different people and your GP will be best placed to tell you more about it and about what these results may signify in your specific case.

You will probably find out more on the 12th of April and I am keeping everything crossed for you for good results. It's good that you have some iron tablets now to tackle the iron deficiency and I hope that they will be very effective in making you feel less exhausted.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

not sure of how much help this can be but I have also had raised platelets in recent blood works.

I had a blood work privately just to check my vitamins and this showed low ferritin and a bit of abnormality with thyroid function so I asked my GP for a test. I had it and was happy to see that thyroid was normal, however platelets were raised. GP was not concerned and asked me to repeat it in a few months. They also asked me if I keep getting iron supplement for my low ferritin (very heavy flow for the past 6-8 months due to fibs).

I have talked to GIs for other issues I am facing, but one of them addressed the issues with the platelets and asked if I had the test during menstruation (which I did). He said that when where there is bleeding the platelet count might be raised.

I am still investigating some issues I face and hopefully on Friday I will have the final all clear, this will be for upper GI so not similar to your experience.

I hope you had good news, just wanted to post this in case it helps a bit with easing the stress to people going through something similar. I am not a doctor nor have any experience so only talking about my experience. I think these can be connected to the period. For me it makes sense because I had a test in August again during my period and it showed raised platelets again. Repeat in October was however clear and it was in a differnt time during my cycle.
