Lump behind ear

Hi,

I found a lump on my mastoid bone about 18 months ago, it's very hard and non-moveable. No other lumps or symptoms but if I'm honest I have suffered with health anxiety in the past so it's making me really nervous.

got an appointment with the GP tomorrow at 9am which I am dreading.

just wondering if anyone has had anything similar.

thanks x

  • Hello,

I have the exact same thing. Mine came up about a year ago. It feels hard and non moveable. I think it's because it's on a bone. Anyway I went to see my Dr who said it was squishy so I was already wrong. I've had a blood test and scheduled to have a chest xray because a year ago I had a terrible upper chest infection and that's when I noticed the lump. All of this is precaution. She isn't worried and said sometimes lymph nodes just don't go back down.

Mine hasnt grown in the whole year that it's been there. Hoping everything comes back clear and if it does she said just forget about it. It will probably go back down but who knows when.

Just to add my little boy had the same but in his neck. I even pushed for a ultrasound and they were benign. I believe these are way more common then we realise and it's a shame google makes us worry like hell with their information.

Hope your app goes well :)

  • I have the same, but just behind my ear. Like a marble... hard, non moveable. Had it scanned about 6 months ago... they said its ok... apparently common... don't panic!!!!x

  • Hi!

I have a lump behind and below my left ear which sounds just the same as yours. It's hard, immovable and no pain. I noticed it in January and went to get it checked out after 8 weeks and I've been referred for an ultrasound which I'm currently waiting for. I can sympathetise with being nervous because I'm also quite scared but also very happy to see so many people on this forum with the same symptoms as me having it come back as nothing. I guess lymph nodes react sometimes and just never calm down again and that's by far the most likely outcome.

Make sure in your appointment though you voice your concerns (only if you want to!) so your GP can talk through them with you. I didn't get to with my GP and even though I got the scan referral I wanted, I wish I had asked more for my own peace of mind. I feel very in the dark with everything now because I got no info out of her and so I don't even know what the process would be if I needed a biopsy. Don't be afraid to push and ask all the questions you need to help you sleep better at night.

Wishing you the best of luck for your appointment tomorrow! X

  • Hi everyone , thought I would post an update.

the GP said it's likely to be a cyst and she is not worried about it. I've had bloods taken but feel a lot better now.

  • Hello,

I hope you are well and don't mind me asking- how long did you have to wait for an ultrasound referral? I found a lump behind my daughters ear (she's now 8months) and was told it was a swollen lymph node.. 3 months later it's still there so she's been referred for an ultrasound too.
