Growth on cervix... nurse/doctor differing opinions...

Hello all

Just looking for help or advice.
Last Oct/Nov I had bleeding after sex. I was slightly overdue for smear, so went to have it done. During smear, Nurse said I had growt on cervix so she was referring me. It was a big shock, and I didnt take in what she was saying.
Smear result: HPV negative

Referral came for July 2021!! Shocking!

Bleeding continued, worried, I went back to her. She gave me thorough internal, which left me lightly bleeding for 5 days, but said it looked like a polyp. I chilled out a bit after that :)

Bleeding continued after sex, but since then I have experienced brown discharge (not related to period or sex... am 47, often dont have a period... when I do, its niagra falls).

I was worried about this new sympton, given the time to wait for refferal so went to doctor.
She examined me, initially couldnt find polyp, the said 'this 'could' be it' ....(?! what?!)
After exam, she said she would expedite the referral... I asked what she'd seen... she said 'what i saw wasnt  like a classical polyp'...
This worried me, so I started asking questions, but she didnt really want to answer and said I would need a colposcopy and that she didn't want to give me 'false reassurance'. I was really upset at this point, as clearly she saw something... but she clearly wanted to get onto next patient as she got up and openend door for me to leave.

I asked again what she had seen, she waffled a bit, said that the Nurse was experienced and there is likely also a polyp there, but maybe its 'retracted' and then mentioned widened cervix and redness... but was very evasive.

I have spent all weekend in a state, not sure what to think...upset at her saying that she didnt want to give 'false reassurance', as to me, you would only say that if it was likely something bad. If it is bad, its been left for 6 months, after being told not to worry by nurse :(
Do polyps retract? I know they fall off, but I havent felt it come out. I am petrified now. I have no idea what is going on?
I can't sleep or think straight. Would appreciate any thoughts or wise words. xx

  • Hello Shoobeedoo

I'm sorry to hear about the ongoing health concerns that you've had and the new symptoms that you've recently developed. It sounds from your post as if this most recent appointment with the Dr has left you feeling really worried and anxious about things.

I know that most of our members here will understand how worrying this time of waiting for appointments and tests can be. The unknown can be a scary prospect to face. It can often help to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you'd find it beneficial to have a chat with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they will be able to clarify some points and offer you some support and reassurance ahead of your appointment.

If you would like to speak to them, they're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for your appointment and that things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,
