Tonsil cancer worries

Hi, first time posting, after any thoughts really.

In Jan, I started having a sensation of a lump in my throat and when I looked, I noticed one tonsil was larger than the other.  I'm not sure how long it's been like that.  Dr prescribed antibiotics over the phone, despite not having any pain, but this did nothing.  Got referred to ENT and finally had appointment this week - had a camera put up through my nose and down my throat.  Dr said he couldn't really see or feel anything but is concerned about the large tonsil and mentioned cancer.  He put me on a two week referral for an MRI scan which I now have an appointment for.
I completely did the wrong thing and looked at google and am feeling a bit sick with worry. I wish I'd ask the Dr how likely he thought it was to be cancer.  I'm worried he didn't tell me everything at the ENT appointment.  He seemed quite matter-of-fact, but looked serious about it.  I think I'm massively overthinking going over and over that appointment.
Any words or advice from anyone with experience of this would be much appreciated.  I'm 44 with 2 young children and really quite scared.

thank you!

  • Hi there,

I totally understand your agnst and worried about any potential diagnosis.

I had tonsil cancer couple years ago and am absutely fine now and all clear after treatment and recovery.
The fact that he could not see or feel anything is a good sign but seems right he wanted to get an MRI scan to see if anything shows up further as there is a limit to what the camera down nose etc will do.
MRI will pick up anything at all untoward.

When I went for my ENT appointment  I has scope as well they pretty much told immediately once camera down that it looked like I had tonsil cancer.Seccond consultant confirmed as did an MRI.
Challenging treatment/recovery but cured and the statistics for cure on this particular type of cancer is really high. My consultant told me at first appt he was looking to cure this - and he did.

Please stay off Google as there is so much mis information out there and out of  date and you will most certainly be able to diagnose any illness under the sun there with symptoms.
Please stay off Google and stick to site like NHS/Gov/here on cancer research/macmillan where you will get more realistic help and advice.

I have a blog that I wont share with you yet as remember this could be many many things that are not necessarily cancer and perhaps a tonsil needing removed.

Two week referral is pretty standard and good that you have appointment already booked.

You wont get told anythig at MRI as they are just scanning to provide the consultant with the results and you will be called in by the consultant when available. To be honest with you this may take 10 days but do check as Im not sure of current or local timings of results being delivered.

I hope this helps a little drawn from my own expierence and we are all different but I wanted to reach out and repsond as I also know how anxious you may be just now and wondersing who to talk to.
I often think its the not knowing and the waiting thats the worst so its good you have an appointment to start the ball rolling but take some comfort .albeit no guarantees, that nothing was showing up immediatly at ENT appointment or when you had scope

Staff off google, hopefully MRI will show nothing or at least something easlily fixed or if something else then it will be treated accordingly and you will have a little blip in life then back to normailty.
Little more to it I know but hopefully this gives you some persepective from someone who has been throught the journey.

Feel free to ask any questions or if you want to friend request I am happy to have a 1-1 private thread with you if you feel that would help.

    kind regards

    Ian
