Lump in breast, worried!

Hello,

One week ago I had a quick sharp pain go into my nipple(the pierced one). It's not the first time that had happened but it did seem stronger. I just put it down to the fact it's my pierced nipple. (Pierced in august last year). Anyway, I put my hand up to it and pushed it, that's when I felt a very small pea size hardish lump deep down behind the areola. This day was the last day of my period, so I didn't think much of it and thought maybe that's why. Kept an eye on it over the week, and asked my partner too aswell, both is us agree it has risen to the surface of the areola, right next to the ball of the nipple bar, still feels pea sized, doesn't hurt, think it's smooth, unsure if it moves but I'm pretty sure it feels hard. I called the doctors yesterday to book an appointment and have a phone appointment next Friday, but was told by the receptionist if any changes within the week to call up sooner. I wasn't feeling overly worried by it to start with but I done a little Googling and have made myself worry about breast cancer! I'm 30 with 3 children under the age of 8, I'm due to get married in September and I'm worried that something sinister is coming my way!! Don't think I could cope. Just wondered if anybody had anything similar and it was totally normal or not. Thankyou to anyone that reads this.

  • Hi, sorry you are going through this. I'm experiencing something similar at the moment. I found a lump, it feels a bit bigger than a pea size just under/above my nipple. I had a GP appointment and they said it moved so was likely a blocked milk duct as I had a baby in December. They gave me antibiotics which did nothing so I went back. Saw another GP who said they didn't think it was a blocked milk duct and referred me to the breast clinic for a scan. I go on Friday next week.

Like you mention I've been Googling all sorts and it doesn't do much other than cause more worry. It's good you have a GP appointment and hopefully they will be able to see you to put your mind at rest or just give you more information. I keep trying to just focus on other things as I think there's nothing I can do until I see someone. Fingers crossed it's nothing serious for you.

  • Hello and Thankyou for replying to me.
I am sorry to hear you are going through something similar. I'm glad you have been referred to the breast clinic, how long have you had the lump for? Is it smooth and round or ragged? Soft or hard?

google is our worst enemy, I was so good at not doing it but now I'm constantly on it.

I was just sitting here feeling the lump and when I push on it, it literally moves further back or around. And then I can't find it and then it resurfaces. It's really odd, no pain whatsoever. It's like a little pea that you push in water and floats back to the top.

hopefully I will have something to go by on Friday, please let me know how you get on in the breast clinic! Xx

  • Hi, no problem. Sometimes on this forum it's good to know you're not alone. I've had my lump I'd say for a couple of months now. It's feels hard and round. The first GP I saw said it was good as it moved between her fingers but I'm not sure what movement is meant to feel like so I can't really tell myself. Sometimes it feels a bit tender.

I also keep prodding and poking mine. Then I keep thinking has it moved or changed size.

Hope you also go on well when you speak to your GP.

    xx

  • I agree this forum has been very helpful and everybody I have spoken to have been very friendly. Oh ok then, I only noticed mine a week ago, not very good at putting things to the back of my mind I obsess over the issues. Mine feels hard, round and smooth. And I'm sure it moves lol.

that's good news then if the Gp think it is moveable too.

    thankyou x

  • Hi rmscj

how are you? Just out of curiosity have you had this lump checked in the breast clinic? I'm totally freaking out about my lump... or two, I can't figure it out. Completely painless which worries me. Pretty sure it's moveable. But can't work out if I'm touching the same lump or if there's two, I know the pea size lump I found moved, but then when I move around the nipple it feels bigger/ or there is another one! So scared!!

  • Hi,

How are you? It's so worrying finding the lump it's the it. I'm due at the breast clinic in the morning at 11.10am. I'm just glad it's tomorrow so I can get some more information. I've been touching my lump all week. One day I think it's got smooth edges the next thinking it's jagged. I can't work out if mine moves or not, sometimes I think it does then doesn't. The list kind of goes on.

Have you managed to see/ speak to a GP yet?

  • Oh good luck today please let me know how you get on!
mom ok just panicking that this is a sinister lump! I am exactly like you in the thinking it is constantly changing. I have a phone appointment today! Won't really tell me much but I guess it's a step in the right direction.

Good luck! Please come back and tell me how you got on! Xxx

  • Good luck with the phone call. At least it's an opportunity to speak with someone and hopefully get more information. I've been so nervous this morning but in a way relieved I'll know more in a few hours time.

  • I have just literally had my phone call, nice and early! The doctor asked me Some questions, didn't really say anything, but has referred me straight to the breast clinic! So worried! Good luck hun xx

  • The waiting is usually the worst part. I just tried to keep myself busy in the week as much as possible while I waited. I think the breast clinic referral is pretty standard for a lump just to be on the safe side. Hope you get your appointment soon.

  • I agree! I have to wait for a phone call from the breast clinic then wait for the appointment date too, I'm not sure how long that's going to take though.

  • When I spoke them I just asked if there was any sooner appointments and they changed mine from a Saturday to the Friday. They did say to me on the phone they wanted me to be seen in within 2 weeks which I think is standard practice. I think the wait just feels longer than it is.

  • Even though we know it's standard, we still worry that it's been put down as urgent, when I went 4 years ago for my other breast I don't remember the whole 2ww referral or anything, I think I was just in a state of panic the whole time because I was convinced I had cancer. I been don't get me wrong I am worried now but I feel less anxious this time, but then I worry that this will be the sinister issue and I haven't worried enough of that makes sense. Not long for you to wait now! I will be thinking of you!

  • [@rmscj]‍ hi hun, how did you get on? Hope u are ok!! X

  • Hi, thank you for the message. I did get good news.

I went in and saw a Dr first who did an examination and all he basically said was it didn't feel like an abscess. He said I'd have an ultrasound and they could tell me there and then what it is but that I may have to have a biopsy. He said not to worry if it is a biopsy as that doesn't always mean something bad. I had the ultrasound and the lady said it looked benign. She said it was something called a lactational adenoma. She said they would recommend a biopsy just to make sure but that it looked benign. She suggested to have it either today or 6 weeks after I had stopped breastfeeding/ pumping. I asked if I could have the biopsy later, she checked with the Dr and they said it's fine. Aparently if I had it today it can cause bleeding/ discomfort so they said it's fine to wait. They discussed it with me and were reassuring. So I have to go back go a biopsy at a later date. They said any issues contact my GP. So overall good. Eww for now. They did keep using the word benign so that reassured me. They were all very helpful and informative. I'm sure I'll worry when I have to go back but for now it's removed a lot of stress.

Let me know how you get on and hopefully it's all good.

  • Oh honestly I am so happy for you and I am glad that it has reassured you!!! It's always good to have positive stories put on this forum too, there is a lot of ladies out there who are worrying about the same sort of thing, and lots of people worrying about cancer In general, and always looking out for positive posts while waiting for appointments! Fingers crossed I can update and put some good news on here too! Xx

  • Hi, how did you get on with your appointments I'm guessing you have had them now? Hope all is well.

  • Hi [@rmscj]‍

yes I had my appointment about 2 weeks ago, I had an ultrasound only but 2 ladies look over the image on the screen and it turns out to be glandular tissue and no further investigation! So thankfully it was all good and I walked Out Tod there with no other worries! Thankyou for asking.

    how are you? X

  • That's amazing news.

I went in for a biopsy which wasn't as bad as it sounded. They did say my lump was moving which was a good sign. I get my results tomorrow. They said it'd be by phone but they asked me today to go in tomorrow for the results. Hoping it's not bad news but not feeling as stressed now as I was initially. I was told I might have to have a face to face appointment if they needed to remove the lump so I'm hoping that's why they want to see me.

  • Thankyou!

Good luck today!! Please come back and let us know your results. Sending positive thoughts your way x

  • I couldn't attend my appointment today due to short notice and no childcare. I've been calling all day for test results but they can't tell me over the phone. I got a call tonight to go in on Friday and was told I may need further tests and prepare to be there a long time. No idea what that means but doesn't sound great.
