Uterine fibroids and polyp

Hi,

I don't really know how to start this message. I've been having abdominal pain and back pain for some time. My GP referred me to have a scan. I've been told that I have 3 fibroids, cyst in the right ovary and a small polyp. I'm waiting to be seen by gynaecologist and have been giving an appointment in June. I'm so worried and all I can think about is what if it's cancer. I have been told to call the gynaecology the end of March to see if I can get an early appointment if there's any cancellations. I try not to think about it and keep myself busy but sometimes it's really difficult. I'm 37 no children, never in my mind did I ever think this would happen to me.

  • Hello Milla83,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting to be seen by the gynaecologist and June can seem a long way away. It's a good idea to try and ring them from next week really to see if you can get an early appointment if there are any cancellations. You might be lucky who knows and I certainly hope that they will find you an earlier appointment.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. You are absolutely right that the best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are some good tips too on this page on how to cope while waiting for news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Milla83

It's horrible when you are concerned about your health and have to wait for results isn't it.

I am on this forum for totally other reasons but am hoping this may help to reassure you. I am 52 now, but when I was mid 30's I had similar symptoms to you. Found to have a whole heap of fibroids, during an ultrasound was told my ovaries were covered in cysts, turns out I had PCOS.

I had embolisation for the fibroids (was a new treatment then) as I didn't want a hysterectomy at that age, no treatment for cysts.

when I met my now husband shortly after treatment I asked him if it was OK that I could not have children, my doctor had said as such. Found out she was wrong when I got pregnant with my son, followed by a daughter when i was 40. A bit of a surprise but safe to say the treatment worked.

Just to say, these things aren't always as scary as we think (especially at 4am)

    Xxxx

  • Hi Lucie!

Thank you for your warm welcome. I have been working and it does really help not to think the worse. I will try to call next week and see if I can get an early appointment if possible. I'm trying not to look online. Just been reading a little bit about fibroids and  it's been informative. I did read that it's very common to have fibroids specially  in Black/African women. I really hope I can get an early appointment. If not I'm considering to go for a private Gynaecologist.

    thank you xx

  • Hi Juliesss!

Thank you for your lovely words, and I'm so happy to hear your story and thank you for sharing it with me.

It's this waiting that's making it worse. It's already hard enough with covid and the lockdown and now to wait for an appointment. But I'll keep things positive and hopefully it's nothing bad.

My main worry is this small polyp and I have been reading  a little bit about polyps just to keep my self informed. I know that most likely I will have a sample taken for biopsy. That's a little bit worrying. But I'll try not to think about it.

I hope you're well and safe and thank you again for sharing this with me.

    Xx

  • Sorry Milla83,

Should also have said, a couple of years ago, I again had heavy bleeding so went for a scan thinking it was fibroids back again. No fibroids but there was a polyp they took a snip off for biopsy and I had a coil put in for the bleeding. Polyp was fine and never heard of again, coil was the best thing I ever did. Procedure was slightly uncomfortable, bit of pain but that was the coil going in. The very nice nurses will give you gas and air if you need it which is fabulous !!

The waiting is horrible though, I am in the same position for something else but at least I have the benefit of knowing what I have. I think that is why it's worse for you as you can imagine the worst when it really most likely isnt to be honest, if you are in a position to go privately then do it if you are struggling, don't feel bad about it.

If you want to chat at any time don't hesitate

  • Ps try and not google too much! It's good to have some information but you can spend hours on there if you're not careful!!

  • Thank you for the reacurence. I'm praying that it's nothing serious. I have been doing some workout today and spending time with my family and that helps. I'm not going to google any more

Thank you again for listening it really helps. And I do wish you also all the best with what you're  going through.

    Xx
