Steps and time before diagnosis?

Hi all,

I just wanted to get a better idea of how many steps there are before diagnosis and how long this might take before we know if it's cancer or not.

My mum has a lump on her neck and went to the doctor first two weeks ago. She had a blood test that showed a slightly raised CRP and had an ultrasound of her neck today, but the person who did it refused to tell her anything about it and said that she would have to wait to hear from the GP. How long might this take? What would be the next steps/tests from here before we can find out more?

We are both really struggling with the waiting process and I can tell my mum is getting more stressed and worried as the time passes.

Thank you in advance!

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum is waiting on some test results at the moment. We know that many people find this a particularly anxious part of the process.

It's fairly standard for the ultrasound technician to not be able to give you any information during or straight after the scan. Hopefully the results will be with her GP before too long but I'd suggest if you've not heard anything within a week then give the Dr a call.

What the next steps are from here is impossible for me to say. It very much depends on what the scan report says but try to stay positive and remember that this could be nothing to worry about.

If you or your Mum would like to speak to one of our nurses for some support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you have some news soon.

    Best wishes,
