Recurring sore throat

Hi I’m new here and looking for advice.

I have been getting recurring sore throats for the last two months, sometimes it’s hard to talk and swallow but after a few Lemsips, strepsils, spoonful of honey and gargling salt water for a day or two it becomes better and goes away but then returns.

i don’t know what’s causing it, I have quit vaping, hardly drink alcohol and have a good diet generally healthy, I’ve kept a diary but can’t pinpoint a trigger.

ive spoken to my doctor who told me to carry on doing what I was doing, I’ve had an ECG heart is perfectly fine and I am waiting on blood tests to see if it may be my thyroid. I had an ECG as I have been getting heart palpitations and chest pain I think that’s due to anxiety about all this, it’s turned me into a hypochondriac.

Im also waiting for an appointment for an ultrasound.

Also I have a lump at the side of my right jaw just below my ear, it doesn’t hurt and it’s not noticeable.

Any ideas how I can permanently get rid of this or what it could be?

  • Hi.  I had something similar, lots of sore dry thorats, what felt like the beginning of tonsellitis but was not tonsellitis, and then had a blood test. I had raised ESR which is an inflammation marker, and some prminent lymph nodes that teh GP could feel in my throat / neck area, so I went off for an ultrasound.  I had swollen lympth nodes and eventually told I probably had thyroiditis.  As My thyroid function was all normal but the lympth nodes around the thyroid were enlarged and my my blood test for thyroid antibodies showed raised levels of antibodies.  They also found a nodule of my thyroid which I have had biopsied 3 times (along with the lymoth nodes) and now am told I will probaly need this looked into in more depth.

Hopefully your blood tests will give a clearer picture if you need any further tests but an US defintely seems like a good idea, as it really helped me get a diagnosis. Wishng you all the best ...

  • Thanks for replying. I am waiting on tests for thyroid. Do you still get sore throats?

  • Hi.  My throat is less sore now but very dry that can sometimes make it hard to project my voice. Not so much that you'd notice but in the sense that now and then it feels a bit strained.

  • How have you got rid of the sore throats? Have you been given anything for your thyroid?
