Confirmed cancer then told it wasn’t cancer

Hi all sorry this is going to be a long post.
I was referred to the breast clinic for a lump.
last Friday I went for my appointment and after seeing the doctor had a mammogram, ultrasound and a needle to check for fluids.
I then went back in to see the doctor and there was a specialist nurse there aswell. I got told that they suspected cancer and to come back the following Thursday for the biopsy results and possibly a treatment plan etc.
the nurse then took me to a separate room and told me it's a 90% chance that I have cancer.
fast forward to the Tuesday and I have to phone the nurse about a question I had. While on the phone she tells me the results confirm there initial thoughts and i have cancer. She said she was going in to the meeting with the docs etc to discuss a treatment plan etc and would call me back.
a few hours later she called me and told me it was good news and wasn't cancer after all. I'm obviously over the moon about this but left so confused. How can the results change so drastically in a couple of hours.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi I just read your post and yes I think.i would be confused too.

Yes you must be elated at eventually being told you hadn't got breast cancer in the end,but i think you should try to speak  to the person that told you ,you did have breast cancer  just to make sure that the call you got to tell ,you have not got it, after being told you had was correct...ie that you have not got it.

Humans do make mistakes sometimes, and maybe they got your results mixed up with someone else's with the same name,as my sister had thus happen to her,was sent a letter about having a test done ,and when she rung to query it ,and gave all her details, it was a lady with the same name as my sisters, but the  age   and address were  not my sisters, and the hospital appoolgised, when thry realised thier mistake, that they had sent the appointment out to the wrong patient.

I don't know if this is the case for you,but there is no harm in finding these kind of things out ,to put your mind at rest.  But great news that you have not got cancer .Good luck ,abd hope you get some answers soon

  • Hi jassoscared I am sorry but I don't think my nurse, oncologist or radiologist who writes the report are humans.i was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer mets in lungs then they "dissappeared"after 1,5 years and in October 2020 I was diagnosed with brain cancer?I am sorry but they don't their job properly and making people upset.i asked to change the hospital because I don't trust them anymore.how come if I have brain cancer still feeling well and alive?

Not all of the oncologist are human and caring

  • Treseven,

Oh sweetheart, that's dreadful. No wonder you are confused. Can you phone someone to discuss how this has happened and get some more reassurance?

  • I still have my appointment tomorrow to discuss if I should remove the benign tumour or not so I will be asking lots of questions then.
I don't understand how it can change so much in a couple of hours. Thanks for your reply xx
