Potential cervical cancer age 42

Like most I'm a bit beside myself after a trip to the doctors this morning. I've had unusual discharge for 3-4 months in between periods and just started with some slight bleeding too. I had a colposcopy when I was 21 and have been up to date with smears ever since, all negative. Today when the doctor did the swabs she asked if I had the treatment some time ago and I obviously answered yes. She went on to say my cervix didn't look quite right from what she could see. I now have to wait a week to get negative swabs back and then it looks like a referral. I am beside myself , I don't want to tell anyone close in case it's a false alarm but given the way the doctor reacted I don't feel positive that's going to be the outcome.  I know Google is not my friend but has anyone been in a similar position? I am probably due a smear soon but I've always been so good at making sure I've had them but now I'm just panicked :(

  • I was in a similar position to you. I'm the same age too well I was 42 when this all started last year.

January 2020 I went to the doctors with abnormal bleeding between periods, I had a colposopy when I was 27 and some abnormal cells removed. Have had normal smears since all negative. I did have HPV on my last smear in November 2019 which was told not to worry about. Do you know if you are HPV positive as this is a indicator of cervical cancer? Call the doctor and ask them if they tested you for HPV if this is positive get an urgent referral for a biopsy.

I was diagnosed in April last year with cervical cancer.

In about 20% of the population smears don't pick up cervical cancer as it grows so far up your cervix, which is what happened to me, they never mentioned this to you.

  • thanks for replying. I was in a mess on Monday.

In all honesty I don't know if I have HPV. My last smear was around 4 years ago after my second daughter and that came back fine. They have all been fine since the procedure when I was 21. There hasn't been much blood very slightly tinged and only over the last couple of months.

If you don't mind me asking what was your diagnosis and where are you now? I'm waiting for my swabs to come back as "normal " then they will refer me for a colposcopy which I believe has to be done in 2 weeks.

    Trying to remain positive !

  • Hi I also have had cin3 severe dyskarosis in 2008 and then a loop incision a few years ago for abnormal cells once again. I had 12 monthly smears and all normal. I had s smear in september and all came back normal. However a few weeks ago I was checking my coil and noticed a ledge like lump on my cervix very hard. I went to doctors but my cervix was tilted and she couldn't see anything properly but referred me for a colposcopy which is next friday. It is very worrying and I started a chat on here a few weeks ago as well. It did come back off swabs for discharge I had a strepococcal infection. Unsure if anyone else had this around other issues. It is a worrying time
  • Morning thanks so much for your reply. it is so worrying. I initially went for quite a foul discharge which had no smell but would last a week or so between periods. I have to wait till Monday for my swab results and then get booked in for a colposcopy, which I am considering paying to go private for and get it quicker if I can. The worry is making me sick even though I am trying to stay positive. There just seem to be so many stories of the same thing :(

Will be thinking of you and your appointment. Please do let me know how you get on xx

  • They have only just started to test for HPV along with the smear over the past few years.

I was a mess for months and then months again it doesn't get any easier.

My blood was the same as yours, i got back from holidays in January feeling great, then noticed I would bleed slightly after running, then it wouldn't just be after running it was most days but only really light more like a discharge.

I was diagnosed as 1B1 adenocarcinoma in April had a hysterectomy in June, no lymph node involvement and got to keep my ovaries. I had a reoccurrence to my ovaries in December and currently going through chemotherapy.

From January until May I was with the NHS, I was told to stay with them as I wouldn't get seen any quicker privately. That was a lie, luckily I have private cover with work and they are so much quicker with scans and appointments.

If the coloposcopy is only a 2 week wait then that's acceptable.

Please let me know how you get on, sorry I had to run off on my first reply to take a call. If you need anything then get in touch I know first hand how difficult it can be

  • Hi

I did consider going private as was so worried as originally I was told there were 190 people before me but my gp said was an urgent referral and there had been an error with the paperwork and referral. Lucky I chased it up.really and am being seen next friday.

They did say though colposcopy referrals should be done within 6 weeks of referral of that helps you. I would follow it up.

  • Hi Missk79
