Cervical screening

Hi, I had my cervical screening results come back the other day, I am 25 years old and the letter said I have HPV and also they found "borderline changes" to my cervix and I'm going to be having a colposcopy appointment. I'm extremely worried as I'm preparing myself to hear that I have cervical cancer and something is going to happen to me, am I being over worried?

  • Hi Jane

Almost every person who has ever had skin to skin genital contact has HPV and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Most people never know they have the virus, but screening picks up when the virus has caused changes to cervical cells. It absolutely does not mean it’s cancer. Borderline changes may not even require treatment, just regular monitoring to ensure they don’t progress. If treatment is needed, it is straightforward and highly successful. There is absolutely no need to be worried that it’s cervical cancer at this stage..honestly! The colposcopy will allow a closer look at your cervix and if necessary biopsies may be taken-this is not a painful process. Please try not to let your worries get the better of you...it’s great it’s been picked up at this stage.

  • Hi I have had the same,

I am 42 have an appointment for my coloscopy. Borderline cells changes and HPV. Cervical screening results back in days  and appointment was through from hospital within a week. Appointment in 3 more weeks to wait now. Just have to wait and see am sure theyll find 0 would be more rest assured if I could have another snear in a year rather than wait 3 next time.

Was everything okay in the end ? X
