Feeling very scared at the moment

Hi I am a 43 year old male who has been having problems with a persistent cough in the morning for a number of years but has recently been getting red bits in my phlegm when I spit out in the morning.  My partner has said to me for years about going to the doctor but just went last week when the blood started to show.  I've also had yellow and green phlegm as well and have been given a physical examination by the doctor who checked my chest and back using a stethoscope, she didn't appear to find anything that caused her concern and sent my blood for testing which has come back normal.  I have a chest x ray on Monday so hopefully that will shed some light.  I have experienced shortness of breath and do have wheezing at times.  I know its not the best thing to do but have been looking up Google and have seen it can be anything from Asthma to Lung Cancer.  I briefly smoked for a couple of years but it was nothing excessive and I stopped very quickly.  I also don't drink a lot of fluids each day and was wondering if this could be a cause.  Sorry for rambling but just looking for advise on what could be wrong. Thanks

  • Hey man,

Really sorry to hear what your going through fear is natural when we don't know what us wrong with us and ofcourse Google is the go to.  Sometimes it can be something like bronchitis, a hard cough or even a nose bleed. It's easy to say not to worry but I hope your all good and don't apologise for rambling bud. Try think positive hopefully it's nothing serious

  • Sorry to hear that. I have been experiencing pleghm in my throat recently not sure whats causing it
but If you dont mind me asking, What is your work history. depending on your work it may contribute to the development in a persisten cough. Or it could just be a development of asthma in which cause I wouldnt think it be Lung Cancer but rather just prescription of medicine

Hope it makes you feel better.
Im no doctor I do have asthma myself. Best bet is to go get checked out
    by a GP

  • Hi thank you for the reply it is much appreciated.  My blood test results came back as just outside normal but they have said this is nothing to worry about.  I have to go again next month and get a repeat of the blood test and am going for a chest x ray on Monday so will just need to wait and see what happens.  My anxiety at the moment is through the roof but this is probably because I am being diagnosed by Dr Google.  Will try and stay off it LOL.

  • Hi Thanks for getting back to me.  I have worked in offices all my working days so don't think it would be related to that.  Funnily enough the Dr did say something about giving me an inhaler so it may very well be Asthma related although I thought it would be Asthma at my age or can you be diagnosed with Asthma later in life?

  • if its offices, Its good news its probably not asbestosis or silicosis or some construction related lung problem. If I am correct Asthma can come and go at any age its not subjected to an age group.
