How long are people waiting at the moment for scans?

Hi all,

I found a lump in my breast at the start of February and contacted my gp straight away. They referred me to the breast clinic and I was seen by a consultant about 10 days later. She could feel 2 lumps in the same breast but was reassuring to a degree because they became difficult to feel when I was sitting upright compared to lying down and she felt it was most likely just my natural breast tissue. To be sure she booked me in for a mammogram and ultrasound. Since then I've heard nothing.
It's now been over 3 weeks since I had my appointment and I've still not received my next email appointment for these scans. I called the secretary for the consultant to see if the wait was typical and she forwarded me the number for there imaging department so I could chase it up. She said they are very overstretched at the moment and recommended I keep persevering with them. I've tried to call several times but so far I've been kept on hold with no one picking up. I was just wondering if anyone else has found a delay in getting recommended tests/scans done and how long it took to be seen? My consultant was reassuring at my initial exam but that doesn't stop me from worrying, particularly when I have a history of breast cancer at a fairly young age in my family. I'm just finding the wait a little tough with no idea of how long it's going to be.

  • Hello JFmum,

How unfortunate that you keep being put on hold with no one picking up. Keep trying though and hopefully you will at some point get through to them. You did the right thing to call the consultant's secretary to chase this up.

I hope that you will hear from others on the forum who have experienced similar delays and that they will share their experience with you.

Fingers crossed you don't have to wait too long now!

    Best wishes,
