Newbie here - referred to Breast Clinic

Hi all

I'm new to the forum and this is my first post.

My GP referred me to the breast clinic the other day as an urgent referral. I saw her about an indented line in my breast which is only visible and palpable when raising my arm. It feels like a string running down my breast. I've had it for some time but never thought to have it checked as I couldn't feel a lump and didn't have any of the other typical signs.

I came across an article last week and this woman had a similar looking thing which turned out to be breast cancer so as you can imagine, it's hard to try and not let my thoughts jump to the same conclusion.

I wondered if anyone knew how long an 'urgent' referral takes in Scotland? Am I likely to receive the appointment by letter?

Thanks in advance,

K x

  • Hello Mumof1-K,

Welcome to our forum! You did really well to have this checked by your GP and it's good they are being thorough and have referred you to the breast clinic. You will be in good hands there and they will be able to carry out all the necessary investigations so that you get full answers. I know it's really hard after reading this article not to jump to conclusions, but try and focus on the fact that this woman's story may be completely different despite the fact that she seemed to have a similar thing. So don't think about the article if you can and just take one day at a time.

I thought I would also share this with you from Breast Cancer Care which is a really thorough document to help you prepare for your breast clinic appointment. On pages 5-6, you will find some useful information about referral waiting times in England, Wales and Scotland.

Feel free also to give our nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you have any questions or you would like to talk things through with them. Their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you will hear from the countless number of ladies on here who have previously been referred to the breast clinic and that they will be along shortly to share their experiences and stories with you.

Wishing you the very best of luck for your appointment and that everything turns out to be fine.

Keep us updated on how things go for you if you get a chance!

    Best wishes,
