Colonoscopy after abnormal bowel screen test

Hi everyone,  I guess I am posting on here as I am really scared. So my mum had a letter recently saying her bowel screening results were abnormal (she is 68 yrs old). She has a colonoscopy this week on Thursday and I know she is hiding her worry. I am terrified of the worst case scenario that it's cancer. She lost her sister to lung cancer but my aunts cancer was founs via the bowel screening so we are terrified this is happening to my mum.  My mum has had ok bowel screening tests since she was 60 but they found blood in her samples for this test. I am praying it is nothing too serious. Has anybody had positive stories after having blood in their bowel cancer test and what did they find during the colonoscopy?should I prepare for the worst news?

  • Welcome to the forum Blossom although I'm sorry your mum has been referred for a colonoscopy.

Our minds do have a tendency to go in overdrive in the run up to tests (and during the wait for results) but try not to jump to any worse case scenarios or conclusions until you know more. I know that's much easier said than done, as do our members, and I'm sure some of them will be along soon to share their experiences and offer their support.

In the meantime, if you'd like to find out more about the colonoscopy procedure just click here.

Wishing your mum all the best for tomorrow Blossom.

    Kind regards,
