Ovarian cyst and MRI scan so scared

Hi,

my name is Natalia and i'm 19. Yesterday i had an appointment with a gynaecologist for bad pain in my side and irregular periods.

i had an ultrasound and she found a 5cm cyst and says i need an MRI scan that there is something in it.

ive had 2 friends with ovarian cysts. one had a dermoid and one had a hemorrhagic cyst. both were detected and diagnosed on ultrasound.

i'm absolutely terrified i have cancer.

does anyone have a similar story? or no if this is just routine and doesn't mean anything serious?

thank you :)

  • It's horrible waiting for scans and results. I was told the MRI helps locate and position the cysts for me however i have 2 on different ovaries. They think they're dermoid and want to remove them. I don't fully know what indicates different routes. Have you had any blood tests? I know for me that's part of the concern. At your age it's most likely cysts. My friend had one removed at 19. I don't know what scans they did but it was so long ago they'd do different investigations any way. I'd be glad they're being thorough and try to distract yourself. I'm not being very good about that myself. You can always speak to your radiologist when you see them about what the notes say as mine helped explain things really well.

  • Hi Lyns21

thanks so much for your reply! i had a blood test but she only checked my hormone levels and they came back normal. i'm trying to not think the worst, but i always think about the worst case. i wish you the best in your results and recovery! keep me updated xx
