Lump on tonail for 5 years or more.

Hello guys & gals

I posted a post a few months back about having a lump on my tonsil for 2 years or more and was awaiting a consultation with ENT.

Since then I have had a Snapchat memory pop back to me form 2016 so I've had this lump 5 years now from what I remember its never grew, never had any issue until August last year around my birthday I was struggling to breathe and had difficulty swallowing foods. Last Saturday I had an ENT appointment and the camera in the nose which was not very pleasant and my Tonsil was swollen on one side and also my lingual tonsil is swollen so he arranged a head & neck CT scan which I have next week. The ENT doctor told me he see's no signs of cancer visually I asked what that meant and he said normally a cancerous lump or lesion would be bleeding or leaking mucus mine don't look like that and he would bet his pay check on it but he cannot be certain of what is causing it so he wanted a CT and more than likely a tonsillectomy due to my trouble swallowing foods.

So I was just wondering what I should be expecting and if anyone was in a similar experience and it didn't turn out to be cancerous.

Also my wife has had pre cancerous HPV cells burned from her cervix and obviously I've seen on TV and in newspapers about HPV related throat and tonsil cancers anyone have any experience in the 2.

  • Hi Michael1990,

It's good to hear you're getting this checked out and that you have a further appointment booked in - hopefully before too long you'll get a better picture of what's going on. Try to take reassurance from what the specialist has said so far - although I appreciate that without the certainty it will always be difficult.

It's hard to advise on what to expect - unfortunately the only thing to really do is wait for the next appointment and the results that follow.

As for your last point, if you'd like to talk this through with one of our nurses at all then you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,
