HPV and low grade Dyskaryosis

Hi everyone

Don't know if anyone can help bu last year I had my results come back as low grade dyskaryosis and HPV positive. I'm worried sick I have my next check up appointment at the hospital 9th march this coming Tuesday. Does anyone know what procedure I will have at the hospital will it be a smear test only or smear test and coloscopy? Also I'm worried sick thinking the worst not sleeping hardly at all scared of the thought that this year I have to attend my appointment on my own and I am seriously petrified.

Please can someone help I would like to be able to talk to someone if possible?

Thanks

Catherine

  • Hi Catherine1,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of your worries and that you haven't received a reply up to now.

It is likely it will be a smear test at your appointment - you can find out more on our website here about cervical screening results and next steps.

If you still feel you'd like to speak to someone ahead of your appointment, our nurses are available on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

I hope all goes well tomorrow.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • hi

do you have access to message and i can contact you x

  • Hi no what is message? Thanks

Went to hospital 9th March and the doctor I seen did a smear test first then a colposcopy and she said I would have to wait for about 2 weeks just under for my results but unsure what those results will show as I'm guessing the colposcopy is more in depth than a smear test so I hope that my doctor that looked in the colposcopy would have seen if there was any cancer or not. Am I correct in saying as this is a more in depth look at the cervix and she said all looks okay. So she wouldn't just say this would she? Think she could see a little bit in there still but didn't seem worried. Thanks for your message. Xx cath

  • Morning.

The smear test is just a quick look at the cervix, any microscopic changes cant be seen. But if there is anything major going on, sometimes they can see it as the cervix looks unhealthy.

the colonoscopy is much more in depth. its allows them to look at the cervix through a magnifying instrument. Then the dye is applied and any abnormal cells show up.

i think, from what i was told yesterday, if any abnormal areas show up, they take a biopsy, just to see what treatment is most appropriate. This is usually to see what cin level someone is at, as to what treatment they offer.

i hope that helps, its just what i learnt yesterday at my colposcopy x

  • Thank you for this can you call me I have private messaged you thanks x

  • Hi Guys,

I have just received a letter confirming I have HPV and Low-grade dyskaryosis. I am going for a colposcopy. I was just wondering how the procedure was etc...

I am also worried sick, I have lower abdominal pain and I think a UTI, not diagnosed. I had excruciating pain a few weeks ago after sex, but I just had put that down to having the coil fitted a couple of months back.

But you google these things and it's terrifying, I know you shouldn't google but it's natural!!!

Any words of wisdom or advice would be much appreciated

    Charlotte

  • Hi Charlotte,

Yes it is very worrying when you receive this news from a letter from the hospital just like I did. I was in a panic station with mine. So the procedure was going in to hospital for your appointment then they check your cervix over putting some dye inside you which shows your abnormal cells and then they tell you there and then what they think and then if they see anything then will send off for extra testing or will get sorted what needs doing.  After my check in the hospital they said they can confirm everything looks better but had to wait for a letter from the hospital which came within 1-2 weeks after my hospital appointment where it then said I can go back to 3 years screening. Hpv can clear up on its own and low grade is low grade changes that normally revert back on their own without the need for treatment. But fully understand your worrying. Let them know about the pain after having sex how it felt as they will need to know this.

I googled everything and told them that when I went in that I was terrified and they were so good considering my appointment in the jaopitahospital was during covid and I wasn't aloud anyone to come in with me which I think you can now.

Try and think positive I know it's hard but also just think this is why it's so important to go to the screenings as they can detect things earlier and hopefully remove what they need to if they do have too.

    Hope this helps

Keep me updated lots of love cath xx

  • Hi Charlotte,

I've also just as today received the same news although the HPV was found last year (I'm 26). I have no pain but I do miss periods and for no rhyme or reason. I have my appointment next week. I hope yours went okay and everything was well. I feel very reassured reading Catherine's response. Again I hope all was okay.
