Waiting for cervical biopsy results

Hello

So I had my second smear towards the end of last year, my first one was a year prior and because I was HPV positive no abnormal I had to go back 12 months later. My smear came back saying I was still HPV positive and that abnormal changes had been detected.

I then was referred for a colposcopy where the nurse decided to take a biopsy but didn't explain why to me. In hindsight I should have asked... anyway it's now been over 4 weeks since then and I haven't received any results. I called the colposcopy clinic today to ask for an update as I'm quite anxious and was told that the administrator is on leave this week so they're not sure but a draft letter has been created but it is with the consultant still. I know I am probably over reacting and I've got into a google hole with it all and I am just wondering why the consultant needs to see my results?

I also think it's quite anxiety inducing when they communicate verbally it'll be two weeks, literature given says up to four weeks and then nothing happens within that time frame!!

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, IzzieMcN.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. The waiting game can be one of the worst parts as many people here can tell you but try to focus on the positive and that is the fact your symptoms are being investigated.

Hopefully, you will soon get to talk with others here on the forum who have been in a similar situation. Until then and if you find it too difficult to keep anxiety at bay, feel free to ring one of our nurses and ask any question you may have. They're available on this phone number 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

I hope all turns out fine for you, IzzieMcN.

    Best wishes,

    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator
