Possible Lymphoma and Biopsy

Hi Everyone,

Like anyone I worry! Basically I found a lump in my neck in January. When I came back to uni last month I went to the doctors who had done some bloods that found my liver and white blood cells were a little elevated. So the doctor had a fell and put me through on an urgent referral to see a haematology consultant. Today I had that appointment. The doctor said the lump wasn't that big and that my bloods suggested it was reactive. He has told me I will have an ultrasound with a possible biopsy and will then have a phone call appointment with him in 3 weeks. My concern is this is still fast paced and if he thought it was nothing I wouldn't be having an ultrasound. I guess I'm worried. I also feel rather confused as I don't really know if that was a positive or negative appointment. I am extremely tired and am currently on a placement in a school and finding it quite tough.

I want to know your experiences of everything so please if you feel comfortable I would love to hear them.

  • Hey!

I had no symptoms of cancer but found a lump on my neck. My liver and spleen were checked with ultrasound and they were normal. My bloods were taken frequently and I was always told no further action needed.

the one thing that worried me was that I had just given birth and the lumps were totally painless.

Finally - after months I was listened to and just before our first family Christmas I was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma bulky disease.

I don't want to worry you but I honestly feel be reassured that everything is quick paced, the experts will know more when you get an ultrasound and biopsy.
firthermore, the treatment is so effective for most and I am being cured even though it was in my lung and the nodes are massive. The treatments out there are amazing today!

hope you're doing okay otherwise - take it easy and follow your gut.

  • Thank you for your reply! I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, I hope you are ok. I do feel like something is wrong, i'm so so tired all the time which a bedtime of 7pm for a 22 year old i'd say is abnormal and also I am losing a bit of weight not loads but my clothes are getting baggy and if anything ive eaten so unhealthy recently i wouldve thought i'd put on weight! I also feel like my breathing is a little funky!

    Take care! Xx

  • Hi Ash

Thanks for your reply again I'm hopeful it's a diagnosis of Lupus SLE and that it's a relapse. The nodes were up before I realised the infection so yes could be right. I don't know why I've been put through all the tests though.

Just want to say good luck with your chemo I hope its good news that it prevents a relapse for you

Robyn how did you get on with your GP appointment?

  • Goodness me you're having a time of it.

although I had lymphoma around my body and in my lung I only ever felt nodes in my neck. Each one they told me was 1cm or less but there was one on my collar bone at the front which was bigger but too dangerous to biopsy due to it being on the muscle and near arteries. I don't know the size of this one. One in my chest was 12cm and causing me to have a cough. I also had sore breasts, particularly the right which they told me was from giving birth. It took me months to get diagnosed due to covid and having given birth they kept saying it was inflammatory, postpartum niggles etc. I'm so glad I was persistent.

I think the fact both boobs present with the same symptoms is reassuring.

My nodes to the feel got larger over time, were hard and didn't cause me any pain when I pressed or pushed. I counted obsessively so I always knew when new ones appeared but I was told by ENT supraclavicular nodes should be investigated. I had mostly lumps to the left but then had three appear on the right hand side too.

So sorry to hear you've never been listened to before it was too late and this saddens me. This I can imagine causes mistrust as I have the same feeling with some professionals at the moment.

I must say that when I was diagnosed everyone has been brilliant and my daughter kept me smiling every single day. I have never had a bad down day, not once, I knew I was being cured and I knew it was a battle but it was one I was ready for. I was a mum and had fight like never before.

You have got this either way - lymphoma can be curable and treatable and if it's not as serious you'll get answers by only pushing for them. Good luck and also let me know the outcome. My biggest teller was the CT scan. This is when i was finally heard.

  • I've been hearing a lot about lupus at the moment and although it's awful it's something that can be treated and less sinister than where you've maybe let your mind wander to.

Let's all try not to worry until you have something to worry about. It's wasted energy in a situation you can't change. Also if you're body isn't well your mind is the biggest assets - keep it strong.

    Keep us updated.

  • Your so lovely replying to everyone

Yeah most my nodes are on the right, they are growing slowly the one behind my right ear has been around since 2016. Which was checked at the time as around 5 nodes all 3mm or less. Ended up have ANA antibody test which was positive for lupus then but I fell pregnant in May 2016 and felt fantastic through my pregnancy all my symptoms went away. So they said positive but Asymptomatic so discharged. I have felt unwell since my last bells palsy on the right side again December 2020. Night sweats hot flushes throughout the day but no weight loss!! To me I only had the 5 behind the ear, but when GP checked me mid February she felt the rest and said likely to be inflammatory response come back in 2 weeks which I did then she felt more than last time and thats the reason why I was referred on 2ww. The haematologist last Wednesday said she is looking for cancer!!! I just don't understand my whole process of referral and why she is looking for cancer if it could be lupus, very grateful for the quick tests and the outcome will be Monday 15th just automatically thinking the worst but feel silly for posting in here and it not be anything. Just very upsetting that I've had unnecessary stress. Sorry for the vent can't talk to my family as my hubby is off with depression

Stay strong ladies I hope you all get the answers you need

  • I just feel I wish I had someone to help calm me down and help. I continually worried and even the medical professionals disregarded me so I want to be a support to others if I can.

I praise the fact they've taken it seriously and I think it's better to start looking for cancer and having it ruled out than stat at the bottom, minor issues, and not be diagnosed if it was something. ENT told me I was on the cancer pathway before any biopsy etc before even knowing it was sinister and my partner disagreed with this approach. He was saying I've had weeks of worry but it sped things up and I was taken seriously and swiftly moved on to treatment. Now he says more doctors should do this. Start at the top and narrow it down then important things won't be overlooked.
    I hope this makes sense.

You will know so soon and then you can close the book on unknown worry and focus on the facts. Knowing is better than not knowing - I promise.

Let's hope it is a relapse of lupus but for now it's their stress to work it out and help you. It's not your worry.

  • Ash

I'm so so sorry you had to go through all the disregarded trauma until you got the news you are right it's better to start at the top than the bottom yes I can't wait to close the book on waiting thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me I wish you every success in your treatment.

Sorry to vent on here just don't have anyone to talk to

  • Hey !

Better to vent than keep it all in. Worry is worry and it can't be helped. Try your best to shut off especially night time and everyday is a day closer to getting to the bottom of it all.

I'll be here to listen regardless.
    Keep in touch.

thank you! I'm going to enjoy my first Mother's Day on Sunday as I'm feeling better now from my last chemo. Hope to be spoilt rotten ha!

    Take care. X

  • Awww Hope you have a lovely 1st mother's day I'm sure you will get spoilt rotten, I do by my 3 boys

  • Oh god that sounds so frustrating for you, It's crazy to think you have a 12cm Tumor and they kept neglecting to pick it up. That's the thing they say mine are less than 1cm but they make my neck feel cramped and so uncomfortable. They have never grown from when I've noticed them, my submandibular one is the largest longer than 1cm hard doesn't move but I have a cavity there so hoping it's that But dentist doesn't think so. I've had an ultrasound on my lymph nodes in armpit and briefly on neck and they've said it's okay I have a supraclabicular one because it's not bigger than 1cm even though Google says always always check it out (my baby (he's two not a baby lol) has one so it terrifies the poop out of me). Mines about 4mm so not huge nor won't go anywhere although it's very movable!!

breast pain is one side, I'm not too worried about lymphoma but maybe more concerned about breast cancer as everything is one breast on the left same side as bone pain and lymph nodes I am due to have my cysts examined in a couple weeks / I've stopped feeding and will go for a private scan (if I can save enough) in April if nothing goes further.

Your daughter sounds lovely, there's nothing to make you feel better than seeing your baby smiling and giggling away! So glad you have such strength!!

I would love. A CT but I feel like doctors are super strict with giving these out but I feel something is off!

happy Mother's Day, I hope you have a wonderful day.

Thank you for messaging me x x

  • My GP appointment was a big fat fail. Was so pointless so don't really know where to go from here x

  • Oh no!!!

We're they just dismissive or did they tell you what your symptoms could be instead? I would recommend you ring again tomorrow xxx

  • He hadn’t even looked at my notes before so I had to try and explain everything. He had a listen to my chest then he was like I’m not gunna get you to do an xray or anything as I wouldnt want to expose you to unnecessary radiation but you can get swollen glands in the lungs. He wanted to do an ECG tomorrow but its a little late notice for my placement but then didn't want to do it next week because if it was serious then it would be silly to wait. So we didn't go on from that. So I was like well can we do anything about the tiredness and weightloss as I’m finding it really hard on placement and he was like well there’s no obvious cause so I can’t really do alot. Like I know the ultrasound report says nothing sinister but I still would like to have my issues dealt with as I'm finding it incredibly hard when I'm so exhausted all the time x
