Ovarian Cyst Investigations

My GP referred me for and ultrasound and blood test which found solid cysts and high CA125. Fast forward to having found an endometrial biopsy clear (yay!) and having had an MRI to examine the cysts. Now, i don't know what the MRI showed but have been referred for a CT scan. Anyone any idea why I'd need a CT scan after an MRI? Feel pretty confused.

  • Hi Lyn and welcome to the forum.

Sometimes a lot of tests need to be carried out before the doctors can say for sure what's going on so try not to read too much in to this if you can. I know that's much easier said than done but hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will be along soon to offer their thoughts and advice.

In the meantime, if you'd like to discuss this with one of our nurses they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Wishing you all the best with your CT scan.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Steph. I spoke to the radiographer about it and he compared having the CT to having an MOT, looking at more of my body than the MRI did. I guess they still don't know what my ovarian cyst is so they're ruling things out before they do further investigations. Will find out Tuesday if I'm to go under the knife or anything else as i see the consultant then.

  • The hospital rang me. It looks like I'm to have surgery to remove the cysts and I might lose my ovaries. I'm 38 and not ready for menopause. Still waiting on CT results and don't know until the histology is done if the cysts are cancer. Trying to take it calmly and keep on top of things but my head's all over the place.

  • Hi Lyns,

I hope all is well. Has there been any update since last post? I am going through something similar too x

  • Hi Jmoam17,

Yes, I'm due for surgery in a couple of weeks. After consulting the surgeon they're going to try and save an ovary rather than a full pelvic clearance to try an avoid menopause. They are concerned that one of my cysts may have immature teratoma cells so I may need a second surgery to clear everything or may need chemotherapy or both if it is cancer. My surgeon says it all depends on the type if it is. So, still waiting on the histology from the ovary removal when it happens.

I hope you are receiving good care and that you don't have cancer. I'll read your posts now, keep me up to date,

    Lyns

  • I read your posts. I'd be reassured that your tumour markers aren't raised, scans have been interpreted well and that they're being cautious. Taking your pain seriously is important too. I don't actually have much pain. It's side effects of hormone imbalances that triggered my scans. I had spotting so the GP referred me for an ultrasound. Ultrasound showed suspicious cysts. CA125 in the mid 50s, referred to gynaecology, MRI confirmed suspicious dermoid and another endometrial cyst on the other ovary. More blood tests, LDH over 500 and yet I still might not have cancer. My surgeon is a gynaecological oncologist and was really kind and reassuring. I think that ovarian cancer is so often overlooked that they're extra extra cautious with anyone presenting who has any additional risk factors. Still, it's reasonable to be concerned.

Take care, and as i said,  keep me updated x

  • It's time we beat this disease once and for all
