Advice on a red lump on ear

My daughter is 14 and last week she showed me a small lump on her ear lobe she thought it was a spot but she said it had got worse and was effecting her hearing. (It was on the hole part the exit to the ear canal) To me it looked like a red wart. She had a bit of gunge but not a lot. I thought swimmers ear.

and I wasn't that concerned.

I thought I'd better get it checked out. I was shocked when The doctor has referred us to the hospital for an urgent appointment. The doctor said she thought it was a papilloma and needed checking out. I said should I worry and she said well it's a growth. The lump is o.5cm wide it looks like a raspberry. We have drops for the ear gunge which has cleared up. When I google cancerous lumps it says they are hard (this is soft) she's had a little bit of ear pain. But I would have thought she'd have a lot of it was serious. The doctor said she couldn't see her ear drum. I'm some worried and have hardly slept. Any advice or has anyone had experience of a red lump on ears (it's right on the hole part so is blocking some sound)

thanks Nick

  • Hi. Sorry to hear you are worrying! I had a growth on my eye lid that was there for a couple of months and had to go see a specialist. That turned out to be a papilloma skin virus. He booked me in to have surgery but it came away on its own before then.

Best to get it looked at anyway. I bet it's sore bless her! I don't know, but it may be an urgent referral so there's no risk it damaging the drum and causing infection etc?

Hope it gets sorted for you soon to help ease your mind.

  • Thanks for your reply, I hope you don't mind me asking but was your lump red? My daughters looks like a raspberry and it is moist and shiny. If she knocks it it hurts and bleeds. Google tells me this is a pyrogenic granulola.

Since Friday she had regained her hearing and the gunge has stopped coming out, she's been on antibiotic drops. I'm trying not to panic as if it was a tumour it wouldn't get better surely. I'm hoping that as she's regained hearing her eardrum has repaired itself. Still very worried though.

  • No my lump was more flesh coloured - sorry I should have said. Mine was a little weepy around the edges and also bled when knocked. Its a great sign that it's responding to antibiotics.

Worrying is just what what we do as mothers (and humans) so I'm not going to tell you to stop worrying but do be kind to yourself and get some rest. You've done everything just as you should and because of the referral you should be seen nice and quick. Well done!

  • Thanks for your kind words. I'm trying not to panic but it's hard. I've got health anxiety which doesn't help. I've spent most of the day on google comparing her symptoms. There's two possible things it could be both benign. If the doctor had been more reassuring I'd have been less panicky. I wish they'd hide any worries they have.  If it is serious then I've got to be strong for her. She doesn't understand what is going on which is good and she's fine and carrying on as normal. Even been out for a jog with her friend.
    thanks again

  • So we got our urgent appointment for my daughters ear lump and the ear lump has disappeared. I explained to the lady on the phone from the ENT but she said come in to make sure. But there's nothing to see. I rung my GP who is too busy today to reply. Not sure I am wasting my time taking her for an ear lump that's gone. Also they want to give her a hearing test which is worrying me. So shall I take her to the hospital. It's a two hour round trip and a day off work or just leave it as the lump has gone.
