Should I request an MRI?

I've been having a few weird, unexplainable symptoms lately and I am considering asking for an MRI. I wondering if anyone else can relate?

It sounds minor, but my main symptom I have had for the past 3 weeks is an upper eyelid twitch. It isn't like a typical eye twitch - it only happens when I blink hard or squeeze my eyes together tightly (like when yawning or sneezing). My eye just quivers for about 10 seconds like a weird reflex and I'm worried it's sometbing nerve related? I went to the doctors about it and the GP did a mini neurological exam and said everything seemed fine and told me to go back in 4 weeks if it hasn't stopped for a neurology referral.

On top of this, I've started experiencing muscles twitches all over my body up to 10 times + per day where it feels like my muscle is moving under my skin, not like a full on jolt. I've had these before, but not this frequently.

Another weird symptom is a warm sensation in the back of my hand (like in my vein) that happens up to 10 times a day like someone has injected warm liquid into me. It isn't painful or burning and it disappears as quickly as it comes on. I've never had this before and I'm wondering if it is a type of focal seizure or something?

I've always suffered from migraines / headaches and I was getting these more frequently so was started on medication which seems to have helped. According to the GP, none of these symptoms I'm describing are a side effect of this drug.

I should also mention that the GP ran a load of blood tests to look at my vitamin levels, thyroid, iron etc and all came back absolutely normal.

I guess I am wondering if anyone else has ever had any of these symptoms? I've googled the eye and hand thing (I know this isn't the best idea) and I can't find anyone, anywhere that has described those symptoms how I have.

I am worried it is something like a brain tumor, as these symptoms seem nerve related and I am in two minds about whether to request an MRI scan from the GP tomorrow for peace of mind. I have bad health anxiety and was thinking of just paying to go private if they can't fit me in, in the next two weeks.

Thanks :)

  • I've had symptoms like this and I suffer migraine. My neurologist appointments found nothing in MRI. I think it's typical to get a brain MRI when you do see a neurologist for things like this. Finding nothing in MRI or EEG for me means it's functional rather than to do with anything scary. I'm just posting because symptoms like these are scary but can be due to stress/too much caffeine, sleeplessness or simply due to the messages getting mixed up in your nerves. I just thought I'd try to reassure you. I really hope your symptoms are benign like mine, though, not having a reason is frustrating it's best to wait till you have test results before researching too much as Dr Google can fill people with dread. It's good the GP is taking you seriously and will refer you if it continues.

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I'm glad you have been taken seriously and they have ruled out anything sinister! I think the more I worry, the more I notice other unusual symptoms! It's reassuring to know you have experienced similar and they found nothing wrong. Can I ask what symptoms you had that led to your MRI scan?

  • I recommend to do the test for Lyme disease. The symptoms are very similar to what I had and it was Lyme

  • Thanks for your reply. I don't think I have any of the classic symptoms associated with this but I will mention it to my doctor.

  • Much like you but the warm sensation was more like pins and needles. Had eye twitches etc.

Is there much chance you could have been bitten by a tick and not known? If so then Lyme disease is worth ruling out.

  • I don't think so and I haven't noticed a rash or anything but I'll mention it to my GP!

  • Hello, sorry to revive such an old post but did you ever get to the bottom of this? Exact same symptoms here.
My upper eyelid has been twitching for 8 months now and I can trigger it with sneezing, yawning, blinking hard etc. also experienced feelings of tingling and buzzing in my hands and feet.
Did you ever look into Lyme disease?
