Referred to ENT 2WW - keep getting bumped and symptoms worse

Hi, anyone else got any advice on how they got to see an ENT? I've seen a few posts suggesting that people have managed to be examined fairly recently.  I've been ill since December, treated twice for Strep throat but didn't completely go away, GP referred me to an ENT on a 2WW, just over two weeks' ago, have been given two telephone appointments but keep being bumped. The GP seemed to think either tonsil or some kind of oral cancer/throat  cancer but also have active symptoms that aren't going away: painful swollen glands/stiff neck/something behind the tonsil that's painful and oozes foul liquid a few times a week/headaches/sinus pain/blocked tear duct and sometimes feeling faint, nauseous and just odd. I don't see the point in contacting GP again as the locum I spoke with suggested when she referred me that the symptoms might also be viral so nothing more they could do but the problem seems very much centred on my throat/tonsil/sinuses and not like any virus I've ever had. So starting to panic as pinned my hopes on talking to an ENT but worried about a possible bacterial infection and sepsis in the meantime, as I've had quinsy in the past, although at least it takes my mind off worrying about cancer. Did other people have similar experiences of waiting for appointments? Is it worth trying to see someone privately? I really just want to find some way to have someone examine my throat/sinuses. Any advice really welcome

  • Hi Thomasin,

If the doctor didn't seem too concerned, or perhaps suggested a viral cause, then initially you can wait to see if things improve, and if not then you have a reason to make another appointment with a doctor, where you can discuss your concerns and directly ask for a referral to try to get some answers. If it helps, you can always ask for a second opinion from a different doctor if you feel you're not being listened to.

    Wishing you all the best,
