Large Hard Lump Inner Breast

Hi all,

I'm 23 and waiting for my referral appointment to the the hospital. 1 month ago I found a hard, oval shaped lump in my breast, on the inner side. I had a call from the nurse, who immediately brought me down to the doctors when I told her my mum had breast cancer under 50. She felt it and said it felt like a cyst and that it moves about, I can't manage to get it to move about at all though! I was on my period at the time and it was very painful and red on the skin above it. The nurse told me this sounded and felt like a cyst but told me to call back a month later to report what it's like. Well I still have it and today I have been referred to the breast clinic for testing! Although it isn't painful anymore and the redness has gone down a tad, the lump is still there, very hard, very easy to feel!

I'm so nervous. I've been through this process before and it was just "lumpy tissue" showing up on the ultrasound. This time my referral hasn't been classed as urgent so I could be waiting up to 18 weeks for an appointment.

i keep trying to convince myself it's a cyst but how do I know that! I'm so, so worried.

any advice would be greatly appreciated xxx

  • Hello Smb270797

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently found a breast lump. This period of waiting for appointments can be particularly anxious for a lot of people so I know many of our members will understand how you're feeling.

It can sometimes help to try and remember that the vast majority of people seen in breast clinic with lumps are not diagnosed with cancer. Try to keep busy and take each day at a time can also help to reduce your anxiety.

It may be worth getting in touch with your hospital to see if they have a short notice cancellation list. If they do then you may get an appointment quicker but it's important in the meantime that you keep an eye on the lump and if you notice any changes do let your GP know so that they can see you again if necessary.

You might also want to have a chat with one of our nurses. I'm sure they will be happy to talk things through with you and offer any support and reassurance that they're able to. If you'd like to talk to them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
