I’ve found a lump in my left breast

Last night I felt a lump under my nipple and my heart stopped. Perfectly round, doesn't hurt and moves just a little. I kept checking it, hoping each time it would disappear. I called my GP first thing this morning and received a telephone appointment and was asked to attend the practice straight away. The doctor was lovely and she could feel exactly the same as me but she also noted that my right breast felt lumpy and that was normal for some women. She said she would refer me but she wasn't 'overly' worried. She said sue my age I wouldn't be catergorised as an urgent case and I could be waiting up to two months for an appointment. The thought of waiting that long sends me into a tailspin. My sister had Ovarian cancer at my age and she was an anomaly then too. I wish I was being taken seriously despite being under 30 years old.

Can anyone offer any peace or advice on how to deal with the anxiety this creates? The lumps scares me but I fear for my mental health waiting on the exam and then the results. In my mind these two months could be the difference in a manageable diagnosis or not.

  • Hello Mem00231,

You did absolutely the right thing to ring your GP and it's good they are being thorough and that they have referred you and it's reassuring that she said that she wasn't overly worried. Hopefully as she mentioned that it could take up to two months for you to have your appointment, it is very much possible though that you wil be seen before that - I am keeping my fingers crossed for you that it will be less than 2 months in the end. I can understand though that with what happened to your sister, you want to make sure that you are seen as soon as possible.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are also have some good tips on this page to help you cope with waiting for news which hopefully will help you deal with the anxiety that any wait can create.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine and that you won't have to wait too long for your appointment.

    Best wishes,
