Swollen lymph nodes

Hi all,

I have been referred to hospital on a cancer pathway. My head is in a spin & I'm scared. I have had swollen lymph nodes on both sides for about 4 weeks. I noticed a bump on the left side first & then around 2 weeks later a bump appeared on the right side too, they are both in the same area. They move & feel softish. I have had my bloods taken & they come back normal apart from very low Vitamin D. I have had no Illness but have felt tired, a few dizzy spells & felt sick & have been going through a very stressful couple of months.

3 days ago I woke up to swelling worse around the neck, new swelling above both collar bones & a large swelled up lump on the back of my neck.

I have an appointment booked in a weeks time at the hospital. The doctor said I would be having a scan however on the leaflet it says I could have a endoscopy, a biopsy & chest Xray.

I was just wondering if anyone would like to share there experiences?

  • Hi Mel,

I was in a similar position to you in August 2020 when I noticed a lump on the right side of my neck sort of by my throat, to the side, I rang up my GP because we were in the middle of a pandemic so I thought I wasn't able to get seen too, I explained it was no bigger than a 20 pence piece, she said phone back in 3 weeks If it hadn't gone down, so I rang. Told her it was stil there, same size, moblie&soft/hardish. Anyway she booked me in to come and see her  and she checked me over, felt around my neck and she was sure it was a Lipoma (fatty build up of tissue) in her words "she bets her money on it being a lipoma". But us human beings have a incredible thing of knowing when something is wrong.. And there was.. Anyway she sent me for a ultrasound of my Thyroid.!? & a blood test I was very confused at this moment.went for the blood test and the ultrasound while al having the ultrasound a lovely irish man was saying how it could be this could be that and then mentioned thyroid cancer and how it is very very curable if caught. The next day  wake up to a letter saying I have been reffered to see a ENT specialist in 2 weeks time (me knowing that being reffered under the 2 week mark could indicate me having possible cancer). Went to see the Ent specaislt who was in fact a really profession surgeon(she was lovely) she had a feal around my neck and I had a camera up my nose and down me throat!! Urghhhhh!! Felt so wierd but bearable haha! She then sat me down asked me about my family history and I told them there is no family history of cancer or really any life threatening illnesses, she looked at me and said "it's your enlarged lympth node" I said what!? So it's cancer and all she said was "it's jus pure bad luck" so tha was a big big kick to the jaw I didn't no how to act really, my boyfriend was next to me crying before me because he knew by her face. Anyway I was having to have a operation to remove my whole Thyroid gland (the whole of it to prevent it from returning in the other lobe on the left side) and lymth nodes that contained the cancer and some lymth nodes that didn't. I had a CT of my Chest, adomen&pelivs, and a Mri scan literally the day before my 21st birthday!! Now that's something to remeber agah!! Many bloods tests, followups and I had the operation what went well it was in fact a 11hour operation was in hospital for 4 days my stay was amazing nurses were so funny and I've had radioactive iodine treatment in September jus gone (2020) and now on the way to getting my self in a different frame of mind and eating less chocolate and more healthy, if I can :/. Sorry for the big essay but this is my experience from start to finish and I jus want you to no what ever the outcome may be for you, you are not alone, and you wil jus fine feel free to give me a message if you would like a chat.

    Much love Georgia xxxx
