MRI for ovarian mass

Hi, I am 24. I have been having some pressure pain in my lower abdomen and side and also some heaviness and bloating in my stomach, as well as pain when going to the toilet.

I went to my GP and she could feel something in my abdomen and referred me for an urgent ultrasound and CA125 test. My blood test was normal apparently. When I had the ultrasound the sonographer said there was a 7cm cyst but she couldn't tell which ovary it was coming from because it appeared to be from the left ovary but sat towards the right. She even showed me it on the screen and it just looked like a jelly bean, I know she can't tell me much but I asked how they can tell if it's a tumour or not and she said they look different.

anyway yesterday the GP rang me and said I need further tests, I am now awaiting an MRI and appointment with gynaecology (she said she's done 2 week urgent). I was a bit shocked as I thought it was just a cyst but she said there was a 7cm "mass" on my ovary and they need to take a closer look.

I am such a worrier and can't help but think the worst. I've had cysts before and extensive family history of endometriosis but they've never taken it this far and I can't help but think they must think it's cancer. Does anyone else have a similar experience? I know I'm bound to feel like this but it would be good to know whether there are other possibilities as to why they've referred me other than just ovarian cancer.

  • I had a 14cm ovarian cyst removed it was totally benign but all the medical staff referred to it as a mass I think it's just their term for it

  • Thanks so much for replying, love your name btw :)

did you have any symptoms and did they just do an ultrasound then remove it or did you need further tests?

I know at my age it is more likely to be a benign condition but I can't help but think they suspect cancer and want to confirm it with mri

  • Alfie moon is my grandsons name ( well alfie ) so the moon bit just grew from there, I had an ultrasound then they were going to do mri but said there was no need as looked simple on ultrasound I had ca125 test as well , symptoms were pain pressure and feeling full , they took my fallopian tubes as well as I'm 60 so didnt need them , had both ovaries and tubes removed.

  • Ohhh there was me thinking you were a Shane Ritchie fan! Thanks so much for your response. I guess that's why I'm worried as I thought they'd be happy with ultrasound but I guess they are worried about it for whatever reason and want to look more closely. It could just be how it is sat I suppose.

Glad you're all okay! I am hoping to be able to keep my reproductive organs as I am only 24

  • Tbh the doctors contradicted each other it was the consultant who said there was no need for mri as ultrasound showed simple cyst I could quite easily have had another doc and ended up with mri x I wish you all the best tho and yes I'm sure you will keep your lady bits and pieces love jane xx

  • Hey there! Im 22 with a PMH of abdo boating and right flank pain since around July

I had an ultrasound where they found a mass and following further MRI they diagnosed as a 15cm mature teratoma! My Ca-125 was raised but every other tumor marker came back as normal thankfully. I just had my pre op yesterday over the phone and am waiting for surgery. I know it's difficult BC the process is nerve wracking especially during a pandemic where you can't even take people in with you to appointments but I hope you're MRI goes well and the consultant gives ya a clear plan x

  • Hey. Can I ask how long after your MRI results did you have your appointment with consultant?

I had MRI last Saturday and have an appointment now on Tuesday

  • Hey I had my MRI on the 10th of Feb and got a call the next day regarding it but I missed the call, so chased it and a week later had a face to face appt with my consultant. I still haven't got a date for my surgery since then so just waiting on the go ahead !

  • My MRI was inconclusive apparently but have small amount of fluid on my lung (could be unrelated) that needs checking out. I've been through this process before but without all the tests and scans etc and have had 2 cysts removed in the space of 2.5years. But this one has really got me shaken up!! All my tumour markers were slightly raised including CA125, CEA and C19-9 but not sky high. However, only had a baby 10 weeks ago and this cyst has been watched throughout my whole pregnancy!
