Found a lump?

Hi,

im 21 and have recently found a small hard lump the size of a sewing corsage pin tip just under/to the outer side of my left nipple on the 14th feb.

I have both nipples pierced and i have been having discharge/crustiness coming from them for about 6 months (TMI im sorry!!). I have had them pierced for 2 and 3 years with little to no issues until recently. I have read up about this as much as possible but im not sure if its related to the lump or if it could be an infection. The lump itself can only really be felt if i put the skin between my finger and thumb, it is slightly noticeable to sight.

In my other boob there is a mass of hardness, my nana passed away from breast cancer way before i was born so i wouldnt even be able to find out about genetics as i know some genes can be passed down. I am worried but not sure if a doctor will do anything because of my age.

Please get back to me, thank you

  • Hi Honeyboo99,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. If you've noticed any changes you're concerned about, it's always best to speak to your GP. They'll always speak to you regardless of age, so do make an appointment to get it checked out, even if it is just for peace of mind.

They will likely offer you a phone appointment initially, then if they feel it's necessary they'll ask to see you in person.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi,

ive also recently found a "lump" that sounds very similar to the one that you've found, I also have both nipples pierced but have only had "crustiness" coming from one, the same one I found the lump in.

have you spoken to your doctor about it or had a hospital appointment?

  • Hi, no ive not contacted anyone yet i was waiting to see if it would go itself, i should probably make an appointment soon

  • Omg, finally, someone I can relate to! Although I am sorry to hear you are having these worries! I had just one nipple pierced 7months ago. It's always been crusty on both sides of the holes. Only last week I found a pea size lump next to it under the areola, not directly under the nipple. Obviously this had made me panic. It's not painful at all, maybe tender if I push it too much, it was first quite deep but now at the surface. I found it becuase I had sharp pain through my nipple, pretty sure I always get that since having it pierced. But if I push on the lump it goes deep again and then resurfaces. Very strange. I have a phone appointment on Friday to find out what will happen next, breast clinic etc. I'm terrified it's cancer, but I have read somewhere (I have hope) of a subareolar abscess, which can be caused by nipple piercing even if it was done ages ago. Don't take that as me telling you it is that, still definitely get it checked by your GP, but I am hoping it's just something simple like that for me. Good luck and keep me posted xx

  • Its so hard to find anyone experiencing something similar, ive spent hours searching for breast cancer in people with nipple piercings. Im going to make an appointment tomorrow and im not taking their opinion for an answer, im going to ask for a referral to hospital to be seen by a specialist as my nana did have breast cancer. After hours of searching i found 'intraductal papilloma' which looks similar. Due to my age im assuming its going to be nothing serious but theres always that worrying thought in my head first thing when i wake up and last thing before i go sleep. Hopefully we both get answers soon and everything will be ok xx

  • It really is!
    I also googled

the risk of breast cancer with nipple piercing and found it has no correlation between it. So that put my mind at ease somewhat!

definately do that, a doctor does not have X-ray Vision. They cannot tell, although 4 years ago I had a lump in my other breast and a doctor was 99% sure it was a fibroadenoma, I just couldn't take his word, and when I had an ultrasound they confirmed it for me! Best to get these things checked I say!

yes I are quite young so likely it will be nothing sinister, hopefully! I have also read about intraductal papilloma too. Of course, we wouldn't be human if we didn't worry!

sorry to hear about your nana *hugs*

fingers crossed, let me know how you get on xx

  • Yeah i seen that too which is reassuring and thats good that they knew, i just see so much about young people being turned away and its put me off making the appt for a month but i need to do this now. Im glad theres other people in the same boat as me, well not glad because its worrying for everyone but you know what i mean, its good to be able to speak to someone. And same please let me know how you get on, hoping for the best!! :) x

  • Morning, hope you are ok, have you managed to book an appointment? Xx

  • Hey, i managed to get an urgent appointment today and she said she thinks it could be a cyst, im going to have it checked out tomorrow and see what happens next x

  • Glad you managed to speak to somebody today! Fingers crossed that's all it is. Let me know how it goes tomorrow xx
