Health anxiety ?

Hi everyone !

Just a little about myself, im mide 50s,male,around 6ft ,79Kg, ideal BMI,non smoker rare drinker, reasonably fit and healthy.

In the past few years ive reported to my GP for abdominal pain on several occasions and been written up as having IBS.

I dont appear to exhibit typical symptoms ie im not aware of any diarrhoea or constipation but maybe im mid scale and i have negible symptoms of that nature. I feel i have a good healthy diet etc..

Alongside that i have had episodal low back pain .

I'll admit to a certain level of anxiety probably driven by long term stress. I manage it, have a full time job and am otherwise fully functional !

Its got to the stage now where i feel i can no longer report to my GP with issues but the way i see it, if i didnt have symptoms i wouldnt be going as i have plenty other things to do besides wasting GP time !

For the past few months ive had;

1) abdom discomfort which feels like pain just under both ribs at the front both sides. I've read up on splenic and hepatic flexure issues and it seems to fit that.

2) low back pain- ive had interactions with a physio and doing daily excercises and though it feels like its improved , its not gone away so i plod on.

3)A feeling like i keep need to clear my throat and production of sputum ,ongoing a few months. Alomst like an occasional burning ffeling in the sturnum,, not sure its GERD but dont feel it is ? sometimes feel like i have a slight lump in throat when swallowing.

No weight loss ,no visible blood

In August i had a FBC. I asked for a PSA but doc said i dont need it as not symptomatic but nevertheless ticked the box on the FBC and it came back normal.

Also had Chest X ray which was compared to one taken several years previous and showed no abnormalities.

Nov 2019 i paid for a FiT test which came back as 4ug/g normal..

Nov 2020 i had MRI scan head due to ongoing tinnitus issue. No abnormalities flagged.

I know i have a small none problematic gallstone

I know you will advise go see GP again but they have limited time,

If i didnt have symptoms i wouldnt be so vigilant/anxious but i do so i am :)

Had considered private MRI scan..

All thoughts welcome Thank you

  • Hi Tarquinlinbin,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. As you have said, it's only really a doctor who can advise on any symptoms you're experiencing.

It sounds as if you've received a fair bit of reassurance so far with appointments and tests. If you still feel there are symptoms you don't have answers for, the only thing to do is to see the doctor again - or ask to see someone else if you feel you can't see your regular doctor.

    All the best,

    Ben
