Borderline changes and hpv positive

I'm 24, I have a nearly 7 year old and a 4 months old baby. I had a smear which I paid for privately in feb 2018 as I had constant pelvic pain, unusual discharge and my period were very irregular. It came back as no changes to cells but hpv positive. I went to the doctors and they kept just saying it was pelvic inflammatory disease and putting me on more and more antibiotics. In total I was on antibiotics for two months and nothing changed, I got fed up of being fobbed off and gave up. They told me it was ibs. Fast forward to now, I had my appointment for my first smear with the nhs in January. I received a letter two weeks later saying that there is borderline changes and hpv positive and the same day received a letter for an appointment at the hospital for further investigation. I'm really worrying and can't stop thinking about it, my mum passed away nearly a year ago of cancer and although it was bowel cancer not cervical I'm still panicking as I looked after her and seen what she went through. I suppose I'm just looking for someone to talk about it to and if anyone has any similar stories. I'm really worried as it's been going on since 2018 and I'm scared it's going to be bad news.

  • Hello Jessm20,

I can understand that you would be worried, especially as you've recently lost your mum. HPV is common and doesn't neccesarily mean cancer. To help you feel prepared for your next appointment, you could write down any questions you have. I hope that your concerns are addressed by the doctor. It's also important to put these worries out of your mind and try to focus on other things, as they have a negative effect on your wellbeing.

    All the best to you,

  • Hello I'm in the same boat I had my smear recently and it said normal cells but hpv positive I'm so worried and can't stop thinking the worst people say don't panic but it's so hard when your read so much on the internet. I have read so many positive story's where girls have had this and it's cleared up and abnormal cells have gone back to normal and they always have so much treatment that they can use to prevent anything more serious happening so I suppose that's something to hang on to and focus on but I no how you feel I hope your further tests go well best of luck

    xx

  • I ended up going for my colposcopy and they took a biopsy, she told me she didn't think it looked bad and nothing to worry about and that was that I forgot about it and I got the results on Thursday of the biopsy. The letter just says it confirms abnormal cells and I need LLETZ treatment to get rid of them and then I'll get further results of what grade they are. I'm worrying myself now because it said borderline in the beginning now I've been Googling and come to the worst conclusion. My appointment is on the 21st so got a little bit of a wait and then wait for the results to xx

  • Well the fact that she said it doesn't look bad and nothing to worry about sounds reasonable positive because I'm sure if it was she would notice something wasn't right also boardaline could mean it's slightly turning but they have caught it In time before it does.. honestly I do the exact same and google and that just makes everything completely worse I have literally cried myself to sleep through google it will always highlight the worst case senaroo.. u have followed the instructions giving so keep positive and I hope you get the results u want good luck I'll give my fingers crossed xxx
